This is a fascinating subject and I have learnt a lot from the contributions so far.Can I enlarge the scope of this thread in two directions.Empire ScenarioFollowing the Fall of France The King appoints Lord Halifax as Prime Minister. He meets Hitler and Mussolini in Paris and agrees to recognise their claims in Europe as long as Britain's Empire is left untouched. Mussolini is given N Africa apart from Egypt.The Royal Navy reverts to its plan to send the Home and Mediterranean Fleets to Singapore. Could this have worked?Europe ScenarioChurchill makes a last ditch flight to Paris to persuade France to let its Navy escape to Gibraltar and Portsmouth. His plane crashes and all aboard die. Eden takes over as Prime Minister. He tells the Navy to focus on gaining control of the Mediterranean and send no reinforcements East of Suez. His hatred of Mussolini causes his wife to remark "That man haunts Anthony night and day. Much more than the Austrian Corporal"
