Holy shit, the level of incompetence, and the insight that the administration is lying about striking leadership is astounding.

It's a fascinating look into the workings under the hood

I could not believe that the national-security leadership of the United States would communicate on Signal

That is not the shocking part. Signal has formidable security. The Android phones and Apple phones are the weak link in that chain. The shocking part is not checking who the hell you are sending war plans to.....

[...] The account labeled “JD Vance” responded at 8:16: “Team, I am out for the day doing an economic event in Michigan. But I think we are making a mistake.” (Vance was indeed in Michigan that day.) The Vance account goes on to state, “3 percent of US trade runs through the suez. 40 percent of European trade does. There is a real risk that the public doesn’t understand this or why it’s necessary. The strongest reason to do this is, as POTUS said, to send a message.”

Not to mention the content almost guarantees that no senior leadership of the Houthis were hit, since SECDEF reassured Vance that these strikes weren’t time sensitive.

I’d absolutely love to see a BDA assessment.

Also a potentially deliberate attempt to circumvent the laws on Federal records - we've had similar issues in the UK.

Didn't Trump have form for this in his first presidency?

Well, remember, those humans forming the political class seem to live within a daily personal reality which is at least partially alien to the reality which the rest of us inhabit.

Not keeping much track of the news because messy health I'd not previously heard of this when OP was made around 5 hours ago.

Went searching at that time and among other results found this from a YT channel I'm subscribed to but only occasionally look at,

Streamed live 5 hours ago Ward Carroll
THE ATLANTIC has just published a story written by EIC Jeffrey Goldberg that lays out how he was included in a text thread on the Signal app between all the national security cabinet members that lays out the plan for the most recent Houthi strikes.

Is this a major breach or no big deal?

BTW
"Of note, both the Obama and Biden administrations announced strikes to the media and the world as much as 72 hours in advance, allowing terror groups like the Taliban and Houthis to scatter. We couldn’t find any comment from Senator Schumer condemning those leaks."
That is not a crime. What just happened absolutely is in multiple ways.

They didn’t tell anyone specific targets, or give out the names of active CIA agents…nice try though.

As a simple European I am confused. The Houthi claim to be hitting ships to support Hamas in Gaza. The only country giving Netanyahu a blank cheque is the USA not Europe. I know Musk is not too keen on Jewish people but does J D Vance share his view and want to stop supporting Israel when the Houthi fire missiles at it.

Per 'Yes Minister', the ship of state is only vessel that leaks from the top.

In this case, the caulking around 'Monkey Island' appears amiss...

Um, apparently there were mission critical issues discussed, which the reporter duly redacted.

Europe still supports isreal vigorously, and I believe Vance’s statements are meant to say that closing the Red Sea would hurt European trade more than American trade. And tbh the Houthis can say whatever they want, their actions are more telling.
Whether it was from incompetence/negligence or just not caring, they attacked Chinese and Russian ships in the Red Sea in the first round of the conflict, so even if Europe washed their hands of isreal completely ships bound for Europe would likely still come under attack.

Obviously congressional hearings are happening

“Miss gabbard were you TG?”
TG- I don’t want to answer that.
TG- there was no classified material shared
“Ok then show this committee the messages right now”
TG- 0.0

Ratcliff tried claiming signal was loaded onto his work PC at the CIA, and is an approved method of communicating for business including classified information.

Oh yeah, i posted this at 1:35pm yesterday, but when asked if the FBI is investigating, the director says “I was just briefed about this late last night.”

Folk in government told not to do something, they do it anyway.

Not a new thing.

HC anyone?

Wonder what this thread lifespan will be. Oh well. That's certainly a major screw up .
Detailed story by, well, the journalist and the newspaper that got the "scoop".

The Atlantic is a magazine, not a newspaper.

Yesterday they denied it happened at all, today they're at "no classified info." Tomorrow I presume "it was only a little Classified." And the WH Counsel's office cannot override legal statute no matter how much it may want to.

The Signal chat included operational war details: decision windows, regional timing, POTUS directives. Under DoD Manual 5200.01, this qualifies as classified—regardless of markings. Senate testimony from today confirmed the content posed serious security risks.

Pfff, Leavitt, talk about a "source" - she barks for Trump.

Some good commentary from Mick Ryan:

Just clarifying, it's not generally in the business of breaking news. It's an opinion and commentary sort of publication, so for it to be in this position is unusual to say the least.
Seems like a wholly unnecessary clarification.

"Events, dear boy, events" - Harold Macmillan, I believe.

Some good commentary from Mick Ryan:

I'm not sure that "we used to do it therefore we are obligated to keep doing it" is a 'written in stone' nature of foundation,

The conversation also revealed yet again this administration’s unwillingness to play the role that American governments have for the past three quarters of a century - to help secure the major seaways of the world for free trade. Where once this was seen as responsibility for U.S. administrations, and something that was good for America and everyone else, this administration sees such responsibilities as an albatross around its neck.

Europe still supports isreal vigorously
I doubt you'd find many Europeans who'd agree.

A you-gov survey in November found pro Israel opinions tending around 25%, negative opinions of Israel around 50%, it's likely worsened since.

Opinions favouring Israel's conduct of the war run around 15%, opinions saying Israel had the right of response but has gone too far run more than double that.
