BMT and JMU awarded Landing Craft contract by Japan’s ATLA - Naval News

BMT and Japan Marine United (JMU) announced contract award by Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) to supply Caimen® Japan for the Next-Generation High Speed Landing Craft Programme (機動舟艇).

Not sure if this planned new class will be operated by the recently established Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) Maritime Transport Group triservice unit or by the JMSDF. This article from back in 2021 may suggest the former.

At MAST Asia 2019, the defense exhibition and conference held last month near Tokyo, Japan, British ship design company BMT and its local partner Mitsui E&S were showcasing the Caimen 90 landing craft, with the newly created JGSDF amphibious brigade in mind.

That is a good question. The US Army does operate a crapton of LSTs and landing craft (IIRC, by sheer vessel count the Army operates more ships than the Navy does).

I'd actually lean towards the MTG, myself.
