My thoughts too martinbayer, how will they expand that from the rest of the terminals. But another thing that could kill the third runway before it even gets built is the small matter of the London Mayor who is strongly against it which is rather stupid by my thinking sooner or later it will have to be built regardless of the situation.

Third *parallel* runway.

The irony being that it's pretty much where runways 7 through 9 were planned to be built on the north side in the 1950s.

A third runway is an obvious decision and has been one for a long time now but I have doubts it will ever happen. Given how difficult this would be I wonder if money would be better spent connecting the other London airports to better public transport and therefore make them more appealing for both airlines and passengers.

None of the existing London airports is suitable for expansion given the population density in the South East of England.
Any other European country would have built a brand new airport somewhere on the Thames Estuary or East Coast with high speed rail links to Liverpool Street.
But as even Gormenghast has better infrastructure than Britain we are in the land of dreams.

And that is where the problems lie publiusr, the holding patterns. Until the third runway gets built these problems will continue.

I don't think holding patterns are anywhere near the issue in the UK that they used to be. I have flown in and out of LHR for many years and it has been maybe ten years since I last sat in a holding pattern for more than 10.minutes. No aircraft takes off for the UK now without a confirmed landing time and, aside from the odd issue, typically goes straight in to land. Can remember some flights to LHR circling in the stack for 45 minutes but have not done that for ages...
