Perhaps confusing Tempest development with one of the briefly-considered Tornado engine options?
There was a Hawker scheme for alternative engines for the Tornado airframe which included the Bristol Centaurus (ultimately fitted to P5224), Fairey Monarch, and an American radial. Some sources mistakenly say 'R-2800' but most say Wright Duplex Cyclone (R-3350). That concept died in July 1941 by which time Tornado prototype contracts were being slid over to the Tempest.
