Because of the development of jet engined aircraft and the end of hostilities we never got to see these ultimate single piston fighter aircraft in action. Besides the a fore mentioned Hawker P 1030 we never got to see Nakajima Ki-87, Tachikawa Ki-94-II, Kyushu J7W, Kawanishi J6K, Republic P-72,  Dornier Do 335 (technically 2 engines I know and it was built in limited numbers (12?), Chance Vought F2G Super Corsair (also built in limited numbers (10?)), Hawker Sea Fury (production but too late to see action), and the Grumman F8F (also production but too late to see action). Many of these designs would have incorporated air borne interception radar. Who knows what other developments might have come out of the minds of the engineers and designers if the jet engine had not arrived on the scene???
