From Wings, August 1976:
  • In Feb-March 1948, configuration was refined still further. T-tail remained, but no wing fold was envisioned. Design was cleaned up.
  • By November 1948 with weight growing, requirements dictated a variable sweep capacity for the time being and this design went into mock-up on April, 1949, with mid-fuselage mounted horizontal tail.

There was an interim step between the fixed swept wing and the variable sweep wing, a variable-incidence wing. If you look closely at the notations in the second drawing with the low horizontal tail, it is the one depicted. Here is the mockup showing the wing up. It did not have variable sweep.

Another design definition summary (the penultimate XF10F design layout as well as the final flight test configuration had a swept tail instead of the delta)...
