The Conversation being another one
Just like Enemy of the state.
The French connection
I & II (both release are good in fact)

So many great role and story lifted by his talent and unique take on interpretation.

Almost always a stoic character in some way.
It sometimes takes a great energy discharge to attain that stoic state. Here is a text that I've translated for you. It was posted earlier today by French film director Philippe Setbon:
A small personal memory here. I was in L.A. to get my film "Mister Frost" on track, and found myself in a producer's office.
He had several TV screens playing various rushes from a war movie still in the making. I could see from different angles various close-up shots of Gene Hackman in military fatigues, bawling in a walkie-talkie amidst explosions. What surprised me was that all he was uttering were insults, swear words, obscenities, all different in each take.
So I asked the producer what that was all about. He explained that, when filming emotionally intense or violent scenes, Hackman prefered swearing than actually reading the dialogue, in order to strengthen his facial expressions. The script's dialogues would then be overdubbed in a studio.
Proof that one can always learn from great actors, even by just watching their rushes in an office."

It seems plausible they died from carbon monoxide poisoning. No evidence they intended to die.
As a late boomer crime procedural aficionado, that's my in-going suspicion as well, even though the evening news claimed there was no evidence (yet?) pointing in that direction, but that's what autopsies are for. But if that's what happened, IMHO one of the best ways to go.

Huh.

Hackman’s body was discovered in the home’s entryway and Arakawa was found dead next to a space heater in a bathroom. On a countertop near Arakawa, pills were scattered next to an open prescription bottle, according to the search warrant.

Police said they found the body of a German shepherd in the bathroom closet. Two other dogs were found alive on the property.

No foul play was suspected, authorities said, though a search warrant showed investigators thought the deaths were “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation.”

The New Mexico Gas Co. tested gas lines at the home but didn’t find any signs of problems at the time, according to the warrant.

Sounds like no CO poisoning. Theory: Hackman died of natural causes. His wife OD'ed on pills as a result. Dog got trapped in a closet and expired after a few days.
