One of the interesting what-ifs associated with the TSR2-HS 1154 force was the question of how the RAF intended to cope with its fighter shortfalls.
HS 1154 was intended to be like the Hunter, capable of fighting low-capability air defence aircraft (it could carry Red Tops instead of ground ordinance)
The RN had already ordered 150 Phantoms for its carrier force. Depending on what happened to the CVA force in the 70s some or all of these could have been transferred.
The Lightning F6-F3-F2 force would have remained the main RAF fighter component.
At some point in the 70s work would have been in hand for a VG multi-role aircraft designed to replace both the TSR 2 and the Lightning/Phantom force.
Various stabs were made at this programme in the early 60s, but if TSR2 and 1154 had gone ahead, serious work could not really have begun until the 70s.
This is interesting, as by the mid-70s VG was losing ground to other designs and the success of the F15, F16 and F18 might well have made the UK look at a British F15 or even F117 style aircraft. Drawings of all these possibilities are in Tony B's books.
The TSR 2 and 1154s would have been still in service in the 90s, but would have started to give way to the new design by the end of the Cold War.
