F-35 Tests Proceed, Revealing F/A-18-Like Performance, Testing on STOVL Variant Said To Be 'Going Very Well' By DAVE MAJUMDAR : 16 May 2011

"..."The testing has been going very well over the last couple of months," said Marine Lt. Col. Matthew Kelly, an F-35 test pilot with an F/A-18 Hornet background. "We have performed all the vertical landings necessary to go out to the boat and do testing. We're at about 80 percent of the short takeoffs."

Over the past three months, pilots at the Maryland base have flown more than 125 sorties, many of which were dedicated to preparing for shipboard testing, Kelly said.

"Right now, we're in very good shape to get all of our testing done and to be ready to go to the ship this fall," he said.

Eventually, the F-35B will perform vertical takeoffs, but that testing has yet to be performed because other STOVL trials are of more immediate import, Kelly said.

"There is a requirement for that and we do plan on performing vertical takeoffs," he said...."

Is it a STOVL ( short take off and vertical landing ) aircraft ?

The normal mode of operation will be STOVL. However, having a VTOL requirement in there serves a couple of useful purposes. For one, there are some missions where VTOL may be necessary-certain kind of deck launched intercepts, occasional operation from non-aviation ships, basing close to the front, etc. Another not so obvious benefit is that keeping a VTOL requirement in there forces a desirable weight discipline on the designers. You can fudge almost everything else to try and not deal with weigh growth, (relax the wind over the deck requirement which will be kind of high for the F-35, accept a longer takeoff roil, etc.), but for the VTOL requirement, if you don't deal with the weight, the bird stays firmly planted on Terra Firma.

An aborted vertical landing would be a vertical takeoff. I don't think there is an operational scenario that requires a flight to start with a vertical takeoff. The useful load would be too low.

Not necessarily. Harrier style WARLOC scenarios for one thing come to mind.

"Maj. Richard Rusnok, the F-35B detachment officer in charge for Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 22, declined to offer specifics on the aircraft's classified radio system, but said pilots can communicate with the ship and each other without using radios. The system, which is shrouded in secrecy, allows pilots to silently and seamlessly divvy up targets."
