English Electric Lightning versus Vought F8U-3 or McDonnell Phantom II

How did/would the EE Lightning stack against these 2 contemporaries? If the Lightning was faster than thought, where are its speed and/or time to climb records?

It was an extremely good interceptor that reportedly was very manuverable and was even able to intercept an SR 71 on at least one occasion (by going ballistic IIRC). It also had very very very short legs so it couldn't fulfill the role of either the Vought or McDonnell plane.

Not too sure about Forum rules, but it does involve actual aircraft.

None of the aircraft involved are "secret projects" so probably Aerospace would be the closest. But this plane versus plane debate seems a bit outside this forum's focus. Perhaps the folks at the Key Publishing forums would have a go?

Good point about the Secret Projects aspect, perhaps f16.net? I'm a member there.
