Hi,

The photo dates back to 1972, specifically November, when the American
aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy approached the Egyptian coast. The Tupolev
Tu-16 strategic bomber came out and approached it closely, flying over the
aircraft carrier. A Phantom F4 fighter from the carrier was launched to
intercept it and escort it away from the carrier.

A common occurrence in the time - a Soviet Bear flew alongside CV-61 Ranger in the Indian Ocean in 1987 - we were having our "steel beach day", and thus no aircraft were flying... but we were covered, due to the French having Clemenceau operating with us - the Bear was escorted by a F-8E(FN).

Some of the guys were asking what that was, and were surprised when I told them what it was and where it came from.

Another time, one dumbarse Tu-16 pilot flew too low and aggressive and cartwheeled into the ocean, killing himself and his crew.

Sometimes it was the US fighters that were dumb
