Title changed.
Seems to be from SciFi, rather than kind of theoretical project, as the smaller
space ship is mentioned as similar to the one, used for the cover of a John
Brunner novel, a well-known science fiction author.
A few more works by Ed Valigursky. I know that three of these paintings were used in the Man And Space volume of the LIFE Science Library book series. I believe the aircraft of the Viet Nam War painting was done for National Geographic, and the Popular Mechanics cover speaks for itself. As stated in the other thread, the Empress of Mars painting was used in a monthly flyer for the Science Fiction Book Club in the late 60s or early 70s.
Artist, thanks for posting -- dug out my copy of Man And Space in celebration. I also have that PM somewhere. Great stuff.
I think on the real-life Class III 1.5-stage Post-Saturn, all of the engines would be used at liftoff, and the big core engine was supposed to be shut down and jettisoned. EV probably used a little artistic license to show the propulsion system more clearly.
