I can't read French. I wonder if the weight savings by not having a gunner, gun, ammo, extra oxygen equipment, etc. allowed the ability to carry the greater weight of the torpedo.

The text discusses the BTC and BTD, the single-seat predecessor projects that preceded the Douglas AD and Martin AM. It does not say anything about the single-seat SBD.
