Since World War 2 the typical Naval Task Group has settled down into the following:
An aircraft carrier at its heart
Area Air Defence ships around the carrier
ASW escorts screening the group
An SSN somewhere nearby
A replenishment ship trailing the carrier
In addition there are
Amphibious Group
A Helicopter Carrier or group of Amphibious transports and dock ships
Area Air Defence ships around the Amphibs
ASW escorts screening the group
Surface Action Group
A force of destroyers and frigates (sometimes with a Cruiser leading)
able to use SSMs against an enemy
The US Navy is still able to put together some 8 or 9 carrier groups and 4 or 5 amphibious groups. Not sure if it still does surface action groups.
The RN can just about put together a carrier group and an amphib group. It can possibly put together 3 or 4 surface action groups.
The Russians can muster a couple of surface action groups and an amphib group
China is now able to put together one carrier group and 3 or 4 amphib groups. They dont seem to do many surface action groups(?)
It may be that this model is out of date and that ships will be used more as individual units than groups.
