My understanding is that it accepts mid course guidance updates like it would in surface to air mode but that terminal guidance comes from the active radar seeker head. SM-6, unlike most of the SM-2 family, uses active homing not SARH.Edit: SM-6 might have an additional SARH mode; I think ESSM block 2 does. But presumably you would just use an SM-2 if you had line of site to the target.
