D-Day -- the military term for the first day of the Normandy landings -- was the largest amphibious invasion ever undertaken and laid the foundations for the Allied defeat of Germany in World War II.
On June 6, 1944, Supreme Allied Commander Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower seized the moment to order airdrops of paratroopers and gliders behind enemy lines.
Several ceremonies were being held Sunday to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the decisive assault that led to the liberation of France and western Europe from Nazi control.
Any advice on interesting places and museums in the area of Normandy invasion ?
I will take my Yankee better half there next week, to the American cemetery. Of course we'll also tour the beaches Omaha/Hoc/etc. I'm not sure we'll attend the official ceremonies on June 6 (not a crowd and speeches guy), but any advice on what look for (or avoid) would be appreciated.
