The Cruzeiro do Sul Exercise (CRUZEX) is a multinational and operational exercise organized by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) since 2002, which aims to provide joint training in conflict scenarios and promote the exchange of experiences among participating countries.

The 2024 edition, scheduled to take place from November 3 to 15 at the Natal Air Base, will bring together 16 countries, more than 3,000 military personnel and around 100 aircraft, both Brazilian and foreign.

It is the largest multinational warfare training in Latin America, led by the Brazilian Air Force, with the participation of the Brazilian Army and Navy. More than 1,500 flight hours are planned, with various types of missions, including ground attack, air superiority, escort and in-flight refueling.

In this edition, the Brazilian Air Force introduced two new elements to its operations: the cyber and space domains. The first will feature simulated exercises that expand training by integrating cyber and air operations, testing the security of critical systems that support aerospace activities. The latter will include realistic simulations of space-related events that directly influence decision-making and, consequently, the course of a conflict.

Participating in the 2024 Exercise are Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, South Africa, Sweden, Uruguay, and the United States.

The Media Day of Exercise CRUZEX 2024, carried out by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), provided a unique experience for media professionals. Embarking on the KC-390 and C-105 transport aircraft, journalists and photographers had the opportunity to record the aircraft in flight up close, a remarkable demonstration of the multinational air operations that are part of this largest aerial warfare exercise in Latin America.

CRUZEX 2024 enters its second week with increased training

CRUZEX 2024 is now entering its final phase, with a continuous increase in difficulties for participants. This second week includes new scenarios with increased operational complexities and additional challenges. During the exercise, artificial limitations are also applied to the aircraft's capabilities, which forces pilots to develop creative solutions to accomplish the missions.

Also according to the Exercise Director, during the evolution of the training, as a methodology, there is a reduction in the aircraft's capabilities, maintaining a balance between them and allowing pilots to be challenged in their planning and decision-making skills. Thus, it is possible to evolve doctrinal capabilities in simulated scenarios in the training. "These restrictions seek to force a controlled 'imbalance of forces', increasing the level of complexity of the scenarios and highlighting the training. This approach challenges pilots in training to innovate and adapt to adverse situations, improving their operational capabilities", he explains.

At CRUZEX 2024, each country will offer its aircraft and specific expertise, collaborating towards a joint and solid development of international cooperation in the field of defense. The final stage of the exercise promises to further strengthen this integration, focusing on even more challenging scenarios that will train all of the more than 1,000 pilots in training, respecting the main objective of improving readiness and joint work between nations.

F-15 pilot praises Brazilian Air Force F-39 Gripen fighter capabilities at CRUZEX 2024

Pilot Mike “Hänsel” Scott of the Louisiana EUA National Guard F-15C Eagle fighter, who participated in the 2024 CRUZEX Multinational Exercise, left comments on social media praising the capabilities of the new F-39E Brazilian F-39E fighter:

“Well, unfortunately your cats aren’t allowed melee combat yet. I was even more impressed with his radar capabilities – he does things I wish you two EUA hunters could do!”

“Missile fod#$%. We weren't training for it here. Their radar is also incredible – something we should have in our jackets”

“It has been incredible flying with the newest fighters of the Brazilian Air Force, the Saab F-39E Gripen, made in Sweden. Brazil has been playing for less than two years, and #cruzex2024 is the first major exercise in which it participates. We took great advantage of flying together every day and learning from each other on challenging, mostly fun, flights the last couple of weeks.”
