With the benefit of hindsight the Boeing 707.(and its derived designs from 737 to 747) seems unassailable.
Its main US competitors, the Douglas DC8 and Convair 880/990 put up a worthy fight, especially the DC8, but it was the Boeing that triumphed. Non US competitors barely got a look in.
