Dears friends,

What do you think about that?

I think that airships can operate several missions as coast guard and anti submarine warfare.

I have made some artistic pictures for ilustrate this situations and possibilities.

i am a brasilian enthusiastic about tecnology and defense.

The U.S. Navy (and probably the Coast Guard) did operate a lighter-than-air until the 1960s, though the USN preferred non-rigid airships (blimps) over other types. Some ventured as far as crossing the Atlantic from the USA to Morocco. I see lots of problems with operating a man-carrying helicopter from such a platform but I wouldn't be surprised to see unmanned, solar-powered, long endurance observation blimps as part of a coastal/border surveillance solution.
 
What is the problem to operate helicopters from this airship concept?

The helicopter can land when dirigible stop or slow down.


Other possibilities is to operate a flyingboat like this...or a hoverwing...

So, the dirigible could also carry out the missions of approaches and inspection of vessels, such as ships used by coastguards.

With a radar seasprey 5000 a airship could patrol an area maritima 21 times larger than any ship coastguard.

That idea would have some SERIOUS CG issues.
 
Are you sure? because the MH-6 has Max. takeoff weight: 3,100 lb (1,406 kg) only....

the pressure of internal gas chambers are movable as ship ballast.

engines can adjust the CG and aerodynamics can help it

We can not forget that many cargo airships are designed to carry cargo containers, often 30 tons each.

So, i do not see any problem...
 
I'm not saying impossible, just an issue.

As far as cargo airships go, they land before discharging the cargo so they can re-balance the load before taking off again.

Certainly these variables need to be considered in the project.

However, my proposal would be to Coast Guard, using a vector that can carry crews to inspect the cargo of suspect vessels.

Carvalho2008, have you looked at a weighted ballast system that would ride along a track from bow to stern inside the blimbs envelope? If the track system was slaved to a SAS then you could use it to maintain vehicle orientation while underway or change its attitude without aerodynamic assistance when its motionless.
