The Italian CIRA (Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali - Italian Aerospace Research Center) has started long ago the USV (Unmanned Space Vehicle) program.
Such progamme foresee the following steps:
USV-1: two unmanned vehicles (FTB 1 and 2, named Castor and Pollux) launched respectively in 2007 and 2010 from Sardinia through stratospheric balloons to investigate handling behavior with supersonic speed
USV-2: one unmanned vehicle conceived to investigate handling behavior with hypersonic speed, and it should be launched (originally by Woomera) through a sounding rocket
USV-3: one unmanned vehicle conceived to investigate orbital re-entry with the so called "High Lift" configuration, and it should be launched by Kourou through a VEGA rocket.
