Yes, it was a real project, G-300 "Berkut". The missile-armed Tu-4 were designed to work as part of Moscow S-25 defense system; they were supposed to patrol and engage enemy aircraft that broke through outer and inner SAM rings. The missile itself was a smaller version of standard S-25 SAM without booster, and with radio command control slaved to plane's tracking radar. The carrier plane - modified Tu-4 bomber - was supposed to carry four radars:

* AR-27 search & detection radar

* AR-33 friend-or-foe identifier

* AR-46 target tracking & missile guidance radar

* AR-49 missile gathering radar (the beam of AR-46 was very narrow, so auxilary radar was needed to guide missile into beam after launch)

The system was tested sucsessfully, and plans for deployment were made, but sucsessfull development of fighter-based AAM caused G-300 project to be cancelled. While efficient (the large Tu-4 carrier was able to carry powerful radars), it was very costly to operate, and Tu-4 flight hours were expensive.
