China defense spending

I don't think it's noteworthy at all in the context that the US defense budget may or may not be facing cuts. They are non related, Chinese defense spending is not at all in relation to US defense spending based on these decade old trends. Chinese defense spending is related to the strength of it's economy, it's rising at a much smaller rate now due to China's slowed growth.

What would be news worthy would be a sudden 10-20% spike out of nowhere if China's GDP only grew 4%. But personally, after hearing for the 10th year in a row that China's defense budget grew ~7% again, is not very note worthy in my opinion.

You don't need to see a spike; China is advancing in all areas. Quickly.

Regards,

Not sure what argument you're trying to make there. Tax base down, funding down - what else is new(s)?
I'm not sure what you're arguing about to me. All I commented was it wasn't really news that China increased their defense budget by 7.2% this year. Tell me what's new, the sky is blue? All of you are trying to convince me that it is news and "Nondemocratic regimes should be consistently confronted at every level and opportunity". Like okay sure. Halcyon is trying to make it news because the US is supposedly cutting spending, but the US also has been consistently cutting spending for a long time as well so I'm not sure what point he's trying to make? That China is growing militarily? Yeah that's been going on for the past 3 decades, but it's defense expenditure increase is matched to be slightly higher than it's GDP Growth percentage. I don't think it is at all a big deal and not something that needs "confrontation" like you mentioned.

Global defense spending is on the rise by 7.4% in 2025. Don't waste your time confronting nothing burger news at every opportunity.

I think that dictatorships (which I consider China to be) should *always* be consistently confronted/opposed as a matter of principle.

And exactly who is that dark mighty overlord enemy that poor mainland China thinks they might have to defend themselves against - Taiwan?
