I've read that the Malaysia-Singapore split in August 1965 was a major blow to British plans and expectations in the far East. IIUC the British drastically downgraded their expectations after this, I suspect the Feb 66 White Paper that cancelled CVA01 and put a 1975 withdrawal date on the EoS commitment was influenced by this.It's not really surprising that Britain didn't commit to the US war in a region that their expectations were downgraded as that war was starting.
