In the late 80s Bremer Vulkan developed the SUNLOG-System (Seaborne Universal Logistics), a containerized naval logistics system.
Bremer Vulkan designed two resupply vessels using SUNLOG: MPC 20 and MPC 320 (Multi Purpose Carrier). Both were based on a civilian ro-ro heavy lift ship built by Vulkan called the MV St Magnus. This ship was seen as somewhat "combat proven" because it had survived an accidental Exocet hit while in Iraq in 1985. Interestignly the same ship was later used by the US Military Sealift Command until 2011.
Neither the SUNLOG concept nor the two ship design had any success. The German Navy was interested, but short on cash and multiple attempts to offer it internationally failed.
