818-159 as a VTOL.... I think those rounds behind the cockpit are supposed to be inlets for engines?
The CoG is much futher to the back I believe... So I think they were there to rapidly push the nose up and then use the main engines to lift the plane under a steep angle...
Must have been a hell of a take off:)

Is this perhaps 'tactical' in the USAF sense of 'dropping nuclear bombs on things in Germany', contrasted with 'strategic' meaning 'dropping nuclear bombs on things in the Soviet Union'?

Certainly 818 was the model number for the TFX bid, so presumably this has heritage in the general TFX concept - though not necessarily any specific features.
