Re: Re: Various Blohm und Voss projects
Hi! Blohm & Voss P.170
I imagine that key word for this design is high power, light weight and low drag.(high speed aircraft)
My opinion.....
Merits...
①Cabin was used as a counter weight for heavy three engines. ⇒ short fuselage. ⇒light weight and low drag.
②Cabin was used as a vertical tail stabilizer. ⇒ delete vertical tail stabilizer. ⇒light weight and low drag.
③Wing tip engines. ⇒ reduce wing root bending moment in flight.⇒ thin wing. ⇒ light weight and low drag.
④Wing tip engines. ⇒ reduce wing tip vortex generation. ⇒ low drag.
⑤Tail cabin. ⇒ Large fuel tank capacity near C.G. ⇒ long range.
⑥Engin nacelle tail rudder. ⇒ receive high speed propeller stream. ⇒ small rudder is enough.⇒ light weight and low drag.
⑦Wide landing gear interval. ⇒ stable landing.
⑧Simple wing structure.(It's not necessary to retract landing gear into the wing.)⇒light weight and easy construction.
Demerits...
①Field of front vision is worst for this airplane, and taking off and landing is difficult.
②When one of an engine of a wing breaks down, control becomes difficult.
③Shaking in a cockpit is big and ride quality is worst. A bombing sight is difficult.
④It can't be expected that the steerability and the stability of this airplane are so excellent.

These drawings are all B&V original drawings. Bottom one is interesting. Flying sausage or UFO mother ship. ;D
