Since
hesham is preparing a list of the Blohm und Voß
projekte, I thought that I would tackle a searchable list of numbered RLM designations in the 'Ha' and 'BV' series. This, of course, will borrow heavily from
Cy-27's original pdf listing.
Blohm und Voß were originally assigned RLM 8-x numbers in a block running from from 135 to 144. All these numbers were applied. As is well-known, the Blohm und Voß aviation department operated as the Hamburger Flugzeugbau GmbH from 1935 to 1937. As a result, the RLM assigned the manufacturer code 'Ha' during this period. Thereafter, the manufacturer's prefix became 'BV'. [1] So, several designs which begin as Ha-1xx, are rebranded with BV-1xx designations.
Beyond the original 'block' assignment, there is little rhyme nor reason in 'BV' designation numbers. In the 200 series, random available numbers seem to have been assigned (although the BV 237 ground-attack project and built BV 238 flying boat numbers were at least consecutive). There are also some real outlier numbers - such as the likely-fictitious BV 333 heavy bomber, the jet flying boat BV 726 project, and the built BV 950 (aka L 10 and L11) glide-torpedos.
The numbers for the BV 155 fighter was inherited from its 'outside' origins - the Messerschmitt Me 155B. In contrast, the number for the BV 40 glide-fighter was re-assigned by the RLM from an earlier glider - the DFS 40
Delta V tailless research type. Other glider designs received 'BV 2xx' designations (perhaps because they were glide-bomb or glide-torpedos?). So, it seems to make little sense to re-assigning an out-of-sequence numbers such as BV 40. But this is history so, not making sense, is the RLM's prerogative.
Stylistic anomalies include the first prototype Ha 141-0 - which, by rights, should have been the 'Ha 141 V1'. Instead, this private venture aircraft was later redesignated as the Ha 141 V2 (when accepted by the Luftwaffe for contract-filling reasons). Another stylistic anomaly is the BV 222C series. These airframes were considered both prototypes and pre-production types. As a result, the first true 'C series [2] was referred to as both the BV 222 V9 and the BV 222C-09 - the latter being a portmanteau of BV 222C-0 series and BV 222 V9. [3]
I have mentioned some related
projekte within the listings for context, origins, and planned derivatives. But, I have tried to keep the mentioned
projekte limited to very closely-related designs and developments.
In some listings, I have included
Werknummern (settling on 'WNr' as my abbrviation) as well as Luftwaffe
Stammkennzeichner and
Verbandskennzeichner. In the latter cases, or succinctness, I have not given any explanation of how such changes occurred. Basically, iiuc, a
Stammkennzeichner can be regarded as a factory-applied identifier while a
Verbandskennzeichner makes specific the aircraft's unit assignment.
As always, corrections and additions of 'Ha' and 'BV' numbers are most welcome.
__________________________________
[1] Note the change in tense. 'Ha' (for Hamburger) followed the official pattern of upper- and lower tense letters. However, the all-caps 'BV' (for Blohm & Voß) was made an official exception to that rule.
[2] 'True' in the sense of having been begun as a 'C series airframe - as opposed to the BV 222 V7 which was a production line conversion to 'C series standards.
[3] Many sources omit the '0'. So, for example, the thirteenth prototype will become the 'BV 222C-13' instead of the correct (if anomalous) BV 222C-013.
