The next Aeronautical Society Aeronautical Heritage Group talk will be titled "BLACK SHIELD - Mach 3+ reconnaissance before the SR-71" and is to be presented at the Society's Headquarters at Hamilton Place on 9 November 2023. The event is free, registration will be at 17.30 and the talk itself will take place between 18.00 and 19.00, with questions and answers to follow.
In this talk noted author and speaker Paul Crickmore will explore the history of the Lockheed CIA A-12 Oxcart program, which preceded the more famous SAC SR-71. Using newly declassified documents, Crickmore recounts specific BLACK SHIELD missions over North Vietnam, the military and political benefits of each sortie, operational security and its exploitation by China, and the lessons learned that would affect subsequent SR-71 operations.
In addition he will be available to sign copies of his new history of the entire SR-71 programme.
This link to the event will enable people to book a space rather than just turn up on the day.
