This old series about a British Leander frigate has been mentioned before but someone has posted my favourite episode on Youtube

This will probably vanish soon so get a look at Ark Royal's Buccaneers and Bulwark's Wessexes in action to rescue Brits from a fictional trouble spot.

Hi,
Thanks forthe link. I'veheard about the show but never saw an episode. The melodrama was a bit "something",but it was fascinating seeing the background footage of all the ships, planes, and troops in action.

By 1978, the Ark Royal was paid off and Britain's "fictional response" would have been limited to "The Sandbaggers." In all seriousness, British television was remarkably creative in the 1970s.

I do have to admit that the tropical white uniforms with shorts look remarkably silly. But there again, you had the Chindits fighting in the jungles of Burma in short pants as well. Singapore was surrendered by a garrison of men in short pants.

Hi,
That was my first thoughts about the shorts too.

As to my comment previously, I wasn't rrying to imply that I thought the story was bad or anything, its just that it seemed a little "Hollywood" or I guess maybe "Pinewood" (I'm not really sure what the UK's equivalent of Hollywood is) that the Captain's girlfreind was a hardnosed reporter on scene, which seemed a little melodramatic to me. However, in a lot of ways I could easily see a similar story being done in a sci fi setting, like one of the Star Trek series or such. The fact that the series was set in the then present time did make the story a bit more relatable for me though.

Also, it kind of seemed strange to me that they specfically mentioned that the boat landing crew was to wear hlmets, but in th scenes of the Marines being helicoptered in, the Marines did not seem to be wearing helmets
