Unless I'm mistaken, there doesn't seem to be a topic on this board dedicated to the subject of aviation-related collector's items found on garage sales or flea markets. And yet, I'm pretty sure many of us DO buy second hand books, magazines, models, and paraphernalia related to aircraft in such places. Of course, many more of us prefer to buy through online auction platforms, and that's fine too.

Anyway, I would like to share with you the various items I've purchased over the past three months, hoping this will encourage others to share with us their treasure troves!

(tail aileron needs to be fitted back into place).

Tail aileron? Really?

Well, actually,

Tailerons are actuated aerodynamic surfaces used for roll control of flexible wings, which have several benefits relative to traditional aileron control. These include elimination of torsional divergence and favorable changes to control reversal constraints. Both reduce the need for wing torsional stiffness, which can lead to significant weight savings. This work extends classical 2D aeroelastic bending-torsion section theory to include the effect of tailerons and derives the aeroelastic constraints needed to design wings with tailerons. A point design study based on the wing of the Dawn One solar aircraft is then conducted to illustrate the benefits of tailerons over traditional aileron control in such an aircraft. Here, replacing ailerons with tailerons reduces the required wing torsional stiffness by a factor of 4. An aerostructural ASWING analysis for the entire aircraft is used to validate key findings of the 2D theory, and to evaluate operationally-relevant limits of taileron-based control. We then generalize these results for aircraft designers by estimating the relative net weight benefit of tailerons vs. ailerons purely as a function of high-level conceptual aircraft design variables. In some cases, mass savings in excess of 6% of aircraft gross mass are found.

I came across the term taileron and did some searching. It seems this is a popular method of control for jets but doesn't seem to be used much elsewhere. If you need dihedral for a rudder to be effective, why don't non jet planes use tailerons instead of ailerons?

Tailerons are equivalent to the ailerons on a flying wing. They combine aileron and elevator functions, but not rudder. Tailerons are used on jets which have elevator span not much smaller than wingspan and closely coupled. In a more conventional design with a large wingspan and small tail (eg. T-33) roll response would be poor.

Dihedral is required for turning with rudder on a plane whch doesn't have ailerons. Without dihedral, the plane would just yaw on applying rudder. With dihedral, yaw causes the outboard wing to generate more lift, as it has a greater effective Angle of Attack (conversely the inboard wing has less). This starts a roll, causing the plane to turn (think of it as 'looping' horizontally).

Tailerons could be used instead of rudder to turn a plane without ailerons, but it would need a short wingspan and large elevator (and it would not need dihedral). Thus it would probably look like a jet!

Taileron setting in spektrum
Feb 26, 2021, 11:23 AM
Hi all! I updated my DX6 to re=program my freewing 90mm F-22 and I saw that one of the aircraft types for the tail was "Taileron" and "Taileron-B". After some experimenting, I have no idea how it's supposed to work. When I have aileron and elevator (I bypassed the blue box for the elevators) plugged into my rx stock and select tailerons, both elevators move up and down like normal, and then up and down when I input left and right aileron. I tried one elevator into the ail channel and one in the ele, and that didn't work. Does anyone know how you're supposed to set everything up to make tailerons work with ailerons? I ordered an NX8 and it should be arriving soon, but I'm going to be using the spare 2 channels with thrust vectoring on a mix (to turn it on and off). Thanks, everyone!

The tailerons can be considered as primary control surfaces along with the rudder. These large control surfaces can be independently controlled for pitch and roll control. They can also be used upon landing for additional braking.

Finally, if a government or military uses the word or technical term in official documents, then it is a legitimate word or technical term,

Also known historically as a Rolling tail. ;)

@Stargazer : Recently bought to rebuild my lost library with the essentials:

The Linebacker Raids: The Bombing of North Vietnam, 1972 from Smith for 6£
(but a must is to have also the Rolling Thunder book from the same author)

The Great Book of WWII Airplanes, a compilation of all 12 titles in the series by J. Ethell for less than 20£
(every kids should have it when you think at R. Watanabe gorgeous illustrations). Each single edition generally comes at the same price
