DIRECT's intent was not for a permanent NASA launch system, but for a better stopgap than what the SLS ended up becoming. Much better than having any particular vehicle, Starship or otherwise, would be having a clear plan, and being able to build off each step, instead of the disjointed, whatever-draws-interest scheme we have now.
