USSR considered putting "intermediate" guns of 7-9 inches (180-220 mm) on "small battleships" projects of early 1950s, but those small (relatively) battleships were supposed to carry only 1 or 2 main turrets for a small number of heavy guns. So they actually required something more fast-firing to protect them against enemy light units.
