I suspect that was a search for clearance between the landing flight path and the island. By the time the Nimitz rolled around it was so big and but its island was very small and placed well back that the angle of the landing deck could be reduced.The question remains would the SCB11A deck layout be sufficient to operate the F111B without being so big and heavy that the freeboard issues on the Midway wouldn't arise?
