Air Speed or Ground Speed?

Hi Guys,
What ever happened to the Ekranoplans? These monsters of the sea seem to be the ideal solution now that fly-by-wire, composite and carbon fibre materials are now available.
Are there any plans to have these sea monsters back in-service?

Keyword: "seem to be" Because now we cant see the sky overloaded with the ekranoplans, I believe that they are not the ideal solution compared to the other alternatives.
