So I've heard that during the mid 80s there were attempts to create a 60-ton class IFV based on the M1 Abrams some designs even mounting the 75mm
Areas cannon is this true any drawings

I haven't seen anything about that idea and there's nothing in Jane's from the relevant period. Not that someone didn't propose the idea, but it wasn't very official if they did.

Possibly something based on the fact that the HIMAG test bed used an Abrahms chassis and a 75mm ARES gun? It wasn't an APC, though.

1978 - SAIFV proposal, Abrams-based HIFV with several armament options including ARES 75mm

late 1980s - HIFV was considered in Heavy Forces Modernization/Armored Systems Modernization program - but it was not necessarily based on Abrams, and I do not remember if they were still looking at 75mm

Ah, that's a helpful acronym to search. Here is an English language blog post on the Special Armor IFV (SAIFV):

IIRC the HIFV was looking at 45-60mm gun armament on a common chassis with the Block III MBT.
If you search ”ASM” I had posted some Congressional testimony on the Armored Systems Modernization program which was a smaller program than HFV.

Probably the 45mm ARES design which also used cased-telescoping ammunition.

Is anyone aware of any books or sources with detailed information on the ARES automatic cannon designs? I'm amazed that the US armed forces seems to have largely lost interest in CTA for larger calibers despite what looks to have been a lot of promising prototypes.
