Amazing how well the Japanese armed forces did in spite of this ridiculous, unpatriotic rivalry (as well lousy fuel and poor logistics).  And of course its aircraft designers were top-notch (Horikoshi, Doi, Ozawa)- certainly not copiers any more than US designers were.  I also shake my head recalling how Yagi and other Japanese engineers pioneered radar development, yet were ignored by their own government.  Ironic how later Japan became the world leader in electronics.
