When the U.S. Army announced in 1972 that it was looking for a new utility helicopter, Sikorsky aggressively pursued the contract to build what would become the now legendary BLACK HAWK.

on Thursday, December, 23, two days before Christmas, the U.S. Army called the Connecticut plant telling Sikorsky it had won the production contract to build what would be renamed the UH-60 BLACK HAWK.

On this day 50 years ago, the YUH-60A flew for the first time

First flight of the YUH-60A was on October 17, 1974 with Sikorsky Chief Pilot Dick Wright and UTTAS Chief Pilot John Dixson at the controls.

In a hundred years the afficionado of aviation will be arguing at the virtual pantheon know as the "Secret Projects Society" over whether the Blackhawk or the Hip was the greatest helicopter, back when people used that sort of thing.
The U.S. Army believes the Blackhawk is only half way through its useful life span.
