There are two photos in the ship design section of the introduction of Brown's "Rebuilding the Royal Navy":
Is it possible to identify which projects they relate to? The plan on the screen is described as a frigate, and it appears as something between a frigate armed Type 42 and Type 22...
Hi all, I've seen a couple passing mentions of a supposed JMSDF destroyer design from the direct postwar period. This design, called "UD-2", was apparently a 3100t design with 3x2 10cm/65 and 2x5 533mm torpedo launchers. The primary documentation about this design is meant to be at the Yamato...
From 1979 to 1980, the United States Navy proposed updating their remaining obsolete FRAM Gearing class destroyers in the Naval Reserve Force as escorts to protect trans-Atlantic convoys against Soviet submarines. Some of the proposed modernization included replacing the WWII-era 5"/38 twin-gun...
Hello,
I've been looking for information on the Kleber class destroyers and their follow-ons online for a while. Today I got French Destroyers 1922-56, and while it didn't tell me much more about the Klebers, it did mention names for the "Type 1940" destroyers (Bayard and 5 others), and that...
There is no thread on this Iranian Navy project yet.
This thread is in no way intended for those who want to spit their venom at Iran, its army or government !
My working hypothesis is that the first two letters define the numbering series, and subsequent ones modify the first two.
This is broken by DDGs and FFGs not falling into the DD and FF sequences, but otherwise it holds up reasonably well. Within submarines, there were the short-lived SC, SF...
One of my continuing interests and a strength of this site is information about Royal Navy ships that never left the drawing board.
Recently.not so much has been published about these designs so I thought I would start this thread.
Many projects have there own threads and are well known to...

In the record breaking 5.6 trillion yen 2023FY budget request, the Japanese MoD has put in a request for a class of 2 new ships to utilize the SPY-7 systems originally planned to be used as AEGIS Ashore systems. The current outline...
The Royal Navy began the 1960s with two excellent classes of destroyer (County DLG).and frigate (Type 12 Leander) on order.
In 1966 the replacement of these ships with the T42 and T22 was set in hand.. In addition the T21 gp frigate was ordered to replace other frigate classes.
So not a lot of...
I have quite a bit of information on this design but a couple sources imply that early on there was consideration of using at least one twin turret for the 135mm guns. Can anyone verify if this was true and, if so, what was the intended arrangement of the guns?
Thanks,
Dave G
The Royal Navy in the 1960s has been the place for many alternative history threads helped by the excellent books on the subject and the enthusiasm of Brits like me for CVA01 and co. The US Navy offers even more scope for programmes that could have been. Some thoughts to kick things off...

Designed in April 1942 after a contract was designed for designs of the machinery from the Mogador class, Project 148-A was also similar in dimensions, though with a deeper draft.
The design had a profile extremely similar to Mogador, but with much enhanced AA, as well as dual purpose 120mm...
Here's a really interesting account I found on Project Terminated, by Ronnie Serrano:
'... a couple drawings were done by Pierre Mion for the U.S Navy in the late-1960s which shows using converted Fletcher-class destroyers into makeshift "Harrier Carriers". The plan at the time is to convert...
The Italian Navy is planning a pair of 10,000 ton Destroyers, known for the time being as DDX.

These would be the largest surface combatants built in Western Europe since the 40s.
I believe this drawing is from one of HT Lenton's books on US Destroyers published in the early 1970's. I made a 1/1200 model of this but heve never been able to find any corroborating data on the proposed design. Can anyone shed any light on this one?

If an Arleigh Burke had the same autonomy, the same firepower, the length of the hull and the same radars, would it itself be a destroyer? I remember reading about former naval officers who had written that the Burke of Ticonderoga was better, and that the former could do the same job as the...
Japanese Wikipedia entry on Akizuki class DD stated that IJN started in 1936 to study dedicated AA vessels following the example of Dido class. They contemplated anything from a 1000 ton torpedo boat armed with a single 10 cm or 12.7 cm AA gun to a quite large cruiser equipped with 12 double...
