The saga of the Royal Navy's carriers after 1966 has been the main focus of interest here, but the workhorse of the RN then as now was the frigate.
By the 1970s the RN had plans to replace its Type 12 Leander class frigates with the larger all missile armed Type 22.
Leanders were designed...

The Norwegian Navy seems to be circling in on a few options for their new multirole frigates to replace the Nansen class.

Perhaps the most ambitious NATO programme of the 1980s was an attempt to design a common escort ship platform for NATO navies: NATO Frigate 90.

The project foundered as it became too expensive and failed to...

A few months ago, I posted a thread on a briefing with several more or less obscure frigate concepts for the USN. One of the designs included in that brief is the PXM, which I described at the time as a rabbit hole. This thread is my attempt to chase that rabbit as far as I can go, starting from...
Wiki has quite a good summary of the abortive attempt in the 1980s to design a common escort ship for NATO navies

The thread about the Kidds for the RN reminded me of this programme.
It ought to have been possible to design a ship flexible enough to...

Whenever I look at my little model of the USS Long Beach nuclear missile cruiser I find myself musing what a 21st Century version for Western navies could look like?
Such a ship would replace the Ticonderoga class in the US Navy and perhaps provide Task Force escorts for the RN and MN instead...
1983, rather than 1982 is a key date for decisions for the RN and UK defence as a whole, in the light of the Falklands and it's effect not just on defence thinking but on the UK populace's attitude to their country. As surely as it was to the political establishment.
But in terms of changes a...

BLACK HAWK helicopters continue to be the work horse for the U.S. Army. Forty military and civil organizations around the world use this helicopter or one of its derivative models.

I have finished some simple drawings of US destroyer designs from the 1960s and 1970s. The drawings are based on sketches and artist renderings found in Norman Friedman's book "US Destroyers An Illustrated Design History". I find the nuclear frigate design (Typhoon) very interesting.

When the UK aircraft carrier CVA 01 was cancelled in 1966 one of
the ways of replacing its capabilities was to be the development of
long range surface to surface missiles for both anti-ship and shore
bombardment roles. Indeed even before the cancellation of CVA 01
a study had been done on a...
