Tiny Tim Rocket Zero-Length Launch Rack

Hello, Described in both Naval Fighters #75: Grumman F7F Tigercat and F7F Tigercat in Action is a zero-length launch rack for launching the 11.75" Tiny Tim rocket without need for a drop beforehand, developed at NOTS China Lake and intended for the F7F. Evidently it seems it's only for the...

If interested, check youtube, - I recall seeing some spectacular footage of F-84s being launched thusly..

Avro CF-105 Arrow and its variants

I'm not seeing the VTOL here. Zero-length launch just refers to the use of Rocket assist and a launch rail to get a basically conventional aircraft airborne without a runway. Landing would still require a strip of some sort.

Golovin IVS / ISF rocket interceptor

Somewhat similar in concept to NATO's ZEL (Zero Length Launch) experiments of the 1950's. The Soviets also came back to this concept with MiG's SM-30. http://www.vectorsite.net/avzel.html

    Martin Zero Length Launcher

I also found a couple b/w photos, from what appears to be the mid 50s at Martin Middle River,MD of the Matador missile, also on a "zero length" launch truck. Will scan and post later.

    Inquiry from Walter J. Boyne

Folks, I have been asked to find material for a television production (not broadcast, web-site) on the Zero Length Launcher project. Are there any of your contacts with memories, or even better, film of the F-84 and or F-100 launches, etc? Walt Boyne

    NASA/Langley SpaceJet Concept

...tail-sitter jets with JATO assist. Riding JATOs and after-burners, the cluster would help boost main rocket to fair altitude, peel away to land vertically... Remember this was the 'Crazy Fifties' when zero-length launches, parasite fighters, tail-sitter interceptors etc seemed reasonable..

Convair Super Hustler, Fish and Kingfish

Hello, Hope this isn't too far off-topic but I'm puzzled by the caption on one image at: http://www.testpilot.ru/usa/convair/b/58/super/super.htm. The image apparently shows a model Super Hustler equipped for ZELL, (zero length launch). I'd thought ZELL was for vertical (or near-vertical)...

    BMW VTOL project around 1960

Was this design meant as a competing concept to the zero-length launch fighter, I wonder? Certainly the Luftwaffe were interested in the ZEL concept. Although, from what we can see of the design, it seems have been intended as a (relatively lightweight) battlefront interceptor or the like rather...

    Zero-length launch

Rocketdyne M-34 ZLL Motor Thrust: 130,000 lbf for 4 seconds. Notes: Used for Zero-Length Launching of USAF F-100D Super Sabres. Development began under USAF R&D contract in 1957. Can accelerate a F-100D from zero to 275 MPH in under four seconds. References: Jane’s All the World Aircraft: 1960-1961

Chengdu J-20 pictures, analysis and speculation Part I

Sorry, ZEL stands for Zero-Length Launch, a concept for using rocket boosters to launch manned aircraft (primarily nuclear armed strike aircraft and air defense interceptors) from trailers, trucks, or semi-prepared launch sites in the field, although some tests were also done with hardened...

Tiny Tim Rocket Zero-Length Launch Rack

From the photos I've seen--while not definitive--of the mounting on the F4U and PBJ, it looks like the exact same one used on the F7F. I have seen one photo of a PBJ in testing dropping the Tiny Tim and you can see the still attached umbilical cord used in early testing designs.

Goddard's Experimental Rocket Plane of 1930 and the US Pre-War Rocket Revolution

Dilandu, you are correct in you assessment. I was looking at the Navy's immediate interest in RATO (JATO) or a sea launched long range artillery rocket (similar to a ship launched V-2). There maybe other concepts, such as Fleet Defense using a rocket powered aircraft similar to the Natter or a...

What if Germany went through with VTOL aircraft?

Yes, as a follow-on to earlier F-84 experiments. The F-100 was tested with a simulated nuclear store on one wing, but most pictures have been censored.

...or alternatively in the infrastructure/point defence role, such a drawback could also be partly alleviated using a mobile ZELL (Zero-Length Launcher) ground setup such as shown below (photo via the somewhat short and inaccurate Wikipedia article on Zero-Length Launch). We have the same photo...
