Sikorsky has done a number of tilt rotor and tilt wing projects. Was it a design study for the Army (assumed)? Likely. A real project... Well probably not.

I appreciate the link, still getting used to this site somewhat. I do recall the rotor blown wing DARPA x-plane which is essentially a tilt wing without the fuselage... with one distinction is that Sikorsky's tail sitting rotor blown wing had a flapping rotor head as opposed to a rigid propeller...

While Bell has its tilt rotor program for the army running, the cancellation must be a real blow for Sikorsky.

It surprised a lot of people to learn that Sikorsky has a long history of work on tilt-rotor, tilt-wing and compound rotorcraft. Witness their recent work on the JHL program. Sikorsky's X-2 work is a prime example of this companies willingness to "go it alone." I was at a forum several years...

It appears with the Sikorsky HEX investigations beginning, they are once again looking at Tilt-wing with some level of seriousness.

Given the trends and Sikorsky's experiance (albeit mostly retired) with tilt-wing, I am not suprised they are trying this route.
