Star Wars, Star Trek and other Sci-Fi

I just came across this bit of news. Not sure what to expect of it. CBS All Access green-lighted a series with Pike as Captain of the Enterprise. https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/star-trek-spinoff-young-spock-cbs-all-access

New Super Hornet UAP video from 2015

I only heard part of the promo, so I did not catch the day, but NPR's show 1A will be discussing this next week.

    Star Wars Day

It is usually more the box office than the space (or whatever) effect that causes such a change in a story treatment/script. The following is quoted from the liner notes for the KRULL soundtrack. "It was a time of epic fantasy. During the late 1970s and into the 1980s, the major Hollywood...

    MOL

Another public appearance of MOL back in the day. Not an article on MOL, just the cover art to go with the missile and rocketry articles in the issue. From the museum's collection.

    Favourite military aircraft colour schemes

My favorite color scheme is the old USAAC blue and yellow. While it started as a trainer scheme, for economic reasons it became the 'standard' for a few years. Here is an example on a Douglas O-46 which is one of my favorite aircraft of that era. The source of that color photo...

    Star Wars Day

A side comment about CGI. It's been said that Jim Henson's biggest technical disappointment with The Dark Crystal was that the Gelfling puppets could not give a convincing performance. Early on in the development of The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance, the Jim Henson Studio experimented with...

    Star Wars Day

What Star Wars (not Chapter 4, not A New Hope) had going for it that year was more than just being a feel good movie. Its biggest asset was that it was different from what one expected from science fiction movies. In the mid 1970s, 2001 was still the gold standard for special effects, Planet Of...

    DC-4E

Another find in the Aric Aldrich Collection. There is no information on the back of this photo, so I do not know where or when this picture was taken.

Why is there less variety in aircraft camouflage these days?

Back when I used to be able to get to the American Society of Aviation Artists annual Forums, I heard both Keith Ferris and Wilson Hurley talk about why shades of gray (or grey) are the better choice for camouflage on aircraft. Atmospheric perspective grays out colors with distance and even an...

    Need help identifying a mock-up

Thank you both. I'll place the information on the back of the print. I see by the link that Mark has already posted this image., so this thread can die away - or maybe a moderator could delete it.

    Need help identifying a mock-up

I'm nearing 300 items (98% photos) cataloged in the Aric Aldrich Collection and this is (I believe) only my second request for assistance on this collection here so far. I think I'm doing pretty good on this collection. That most of the photos have some information written on the back helps...

    Lockheed XR6O-1 (XR6V-1) Constitution

Another find in the Aric Aldrich Collection. Look at the tip of the 880's vertical tail and you will see one of the Constitutions in flat paint with no markings. The notation of the back of this print states that this Douglas D. Olson photograph was taken at Mc Carran Field on April 13, 1959.

Funny Fictional Aircraft (the old "Humorous aircraft never meant to fly..")

The Museum has this art on a handout lithograph with real F-4 information on the back. I can scan it and post a clean copy of this image without the Photobucket banner. Also I'd like to suggest we expand this thread to include other silly art like this with official histories, NOT user artwork...

Fictional Aircraft from TV and Movies

As I remember, the model had the jet engines, but every time we saw the ecterior in flight, they used the sound of piston engines. On opening day, my friends and I were, it seemed, the only ones in the theater who got it - at least, we were the only ones who laughed at the gag.

    B-17G with Wing-Tip Gun Turrets

Make has scanned the photos at a higher resolution. For now, I'm posting the detail scans of the turrets. Mark's scans of the full images are each over 2MB. Are those too big for me to post here?
