Aviaspetstrans Yamal amphibian

Hello Hesham!
This project was designed in late 1980s/early 1990s by Vladislav Korchagin, as a development of KAI-20 Angara, which was designed by him even in 1964 but was never built. Like the Angara, the Yamal was a multi-purpose amphibian (passenger, transport, medical, ice patrol, etc...) designed specially for Northern regions of Russia. Unfortunately, the destroying of industry afterwards Yeltsin's "reforms" and lack of financing led to death of this interesting project (and many others... :( ). After 1998 default all was stopped, thus almost all engineering works were finished and the aircraft was almost ready to production. Only full-scale mockup of the Yamal was built in 1994...

Wingspan - 21.40 m
Length - 17.47 m
Wing area - 51.90 m2
Empty weight - 4500 kg
Max. takeoff weight - 9200 kg
Engines - two turboshaft RD-600S (2x1300 hp). Alternative version - two TVD-1500.
Maximum speed - 450 km/h
Range - 2800 km
Service ceiling - 3600 m
Crew - 2
Payload - 2000 kg (max. 22 passengers)

Aviapetstrans Consotium
Zhukovsky 5, Moscow Region

Consortium formed in 1990 by Russia's Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, Scientific Research Institute for Civil Aviation, Gasprom gas enterprises, Institute of Oceanography Engineering Center, People of the North Foundation, Myasischev Design Bureau and Promstroybank. These have a common interest in air transport in remote regions of the north, Siberia and Far East. Aviapetstrans will market services such as monitoring systems and navigation aids as well as aircraft of its own design. First aircraft project headed by Chief Designer/Director General VA Korchagin, is amphibious twin-tuboshaft Yamal, capable of autonomous operation in regions with minimal transport infrastructure.

Aviapetstrans Yamal

Type: Twin-turboshaft cargo/passenger multi-purpose amphibian.

Program: Work performed by five scientific and research institutes and aviation design bureaus under Gosaviaregstr supervision, consistent with FAR requirements. Development delegated to Myasishchev OKB. Full-scale mockup exhibited at MosAeroshow '92; prototype was to be manufactured in Moscow; first flight was scheduled early 1998.

Design features: Basically conventional small amphibian. Unique power plant; two turboshafts side by side on top decking over center-wing section, driving single pusher propeller mounted behind tail unit, through helicopter-like reduction gearbox; position of air-intakes protects them from water and foreign object ingestion. Flying-boat hull and two fixed underwing stabilizing floats. All between-flights servicing of systems and equipment possible from technical bay inside fuselage; access to engine inspection points is provided through access panels in technical bay ceiling, protecting engineer from low temperature, precipitation, mosquitoes, and effects of waves on water. Similar access practicable to remedy in-flight failure.

Landing gear: Retractable tail wheel type; twin wheels on each main unit; all units retract upward, main units into sponsons each side of hull. Optional nosewheel gear under development.

Power plant: Two RKBM RD600S (TVD-1500) turboshafts; six-blade propeller, dimensions and aerodynamics similar to those of of Il-114 propellers. Fuel tank, capacity 2,400 kg (5,291 lb), between spars on each wing.

Accommodation: Provision for 18 passengers from land, 15 from water, or freight stretchers and medical equipment, cameras, equipment for variety of commercial and military duties.

Avionics: Radar in nose thimble.

Equipment: Optional equipment being developed for ecological monitoring, forest protection and firefighting, ice and fish reconnaissance, 200 mile economic zone patrol, and air/sea rescue.

Given the conditions in which it would work, having access to engine etc via internal bay strikes me as very useful.

Hope fire-suppression is up to the job, though...

From 1956 to 1960 V. Korchagin closely related to the Kazan Aviation Institute (KAI). During this period he led student design bureau (SKB-KAI)

From Krylya Rodine 8/2004,

here is the Korchagin/Aviaspetstrans Yamel-2.

Dear elena,
Please ask your friend Valentin if those narrow "sponsons/seawings provide much hydrodynamic lift.
We understand that their primary function is to conceal main landing gear.

I came across another photo of the Yamal mockup next to the Buran-Analogue 002
taken in 1999, at Zhukovsky, via this blog post on the excellent "Drew Ex Machina" spaceflight and astronomy blog
