Canadair Designations

Hi,

the Canadair CL-45 was ASW helicopter project,CL-52 was Boeing B-47B
and CL-61 snow mobile project, what were the Canadair CL-65 (old design)
and CL-212 ?.

The CL-52 was a B-47B loaned in 1956 to the Royal Canadian Air Force to test the big Orenda Iroquois turbojet for the Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow interceptor.

It caused the frame to warp and the plane was scrapped upon return to the USA

A comprehensive Canadair list would be difficult.

Molson lists 23 projects in his Canadian Aircraft since 1909 (along with all the built types, of course). Others are available elsewhere. That would make a start but nowhere near a complete list.

As a side note, it's official Canadian Army and US Army designation was Carrier, Cargo, Amphibious, Articulated. By 1963, production examples were being fitted with a VW 4 cylinder Air-cooled engine (horizontally opposed 4 stroke) rated at 36 hp.

I suspect on that,in JAWA 1963 index a reference to CL-106 & CL-107,and also they mention CC-106
and CP-107 as anther designs ?.

Hesham: With "CL-106" and "CL-107", JAWA mistakeningly assumed that Canadair designation and Department of National Defence designations were directly related. They weren't (at least not in any methodical way).

CC-106 and CP-107 were strictly military designations for two of Canadair's Britannia-based designs. The CC-106 Yukon military transport was the Canadair CL-44-6 (4 x Roll-Royce Tyne 11s). The CP-107 Argus maritime patrol aircraft was the Canadair CL-28 (4 x Wright R-3350 TC18EA1).

I have attempted to reorganize as best as possible the various Canadair related topics on this forum.
This involved splitting a few posts from certain topics to start separate ones, merging topics covering the same subjects, renaming certain topics to replaced "C.L." by the accurate CL-" (so they can be found more easily in search engines), fixing errors (CL-286) and duplicate images, etc.

Molson and Taylor describe the CL-66, Canadair's in-house designation for converted/new build re-engined Convair CV-440s. Canadair had bought the unsold CV-440s, as well as CV-440 production jigs and tools when Convair phased out the type's production to make room for CV-880 production in San Diego. Canadair re-engined the three inherited CV-440s with Napier Eland turboprops, redesignating the lot CV-540C. Then, Canadair received a Canadian government contract for ten new CL-66B cargo and passenger aircraft, used as CC-109s by RCAF Air Transport Command from 1960 until the last two were decommissioned in 1979.

Not "CL-540", but at least three Canadair documents (ads and inhouse report) calling the aircraft the Canadair 540.

Here's a circa-1957 documentary commissioned by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) entitled, "Birth of a Giant," portraying the development and construction of the Canadair CL-28 Argus, including flight of the prototype (RCAF 20710, squadron coded VN-710). It looks like there is even a Wikipedia entry on the film (link.)

I know this is a old thread, but thought I’d take a chance. Is there any additional coverage of the CL-83 (CARDE Snow Goose) in this book or is it limited to its inclusion in the list? I’m researching the early Black Brant rockets and information about Canadair’s involvement early in the program is pretty limited.
