While searching patents for French tanks, found this German tank design put forth by Wegmann. I've attached the tank image from the patent as well as the patent itself.

Did Wegmann ever build it or did it remain a patent design only?

Found another Wegmann project, circa 1996. This time, the tank uses a unmanned turret with autoloader. Patent included as attachment.

Found yet another Wegmann patent but this time, a design of a manned main battle tank turret.

Achzarit has its engine transversely mounted, same as T-54/55/62/72/90. It has space for passageway because it uses V8 instead of V12 - same V8 as on M108/109/110 SPH and XM701 MICV, where it's also transversely mounted (to leave some space for driver which is sitting side by side with it).

There was however a German proposal with longitudinally mounted V8 side by side with passageway - in mid90s, from Wegmann & Co, for NGP
