Hi,

As I promised before,we can take here about French Aircraft Specifications, and we start
year by year, that 's meaning;we will speak about one year at first to complete its Specifications
and contenders,we will leave two to three days to each year.

for 1919

- "BP 3" heavy high-altitude bomber; Latecoere Late.6 (no other contenders are known)

- "B 3" three seat day bomber; Caudron C.26 (no other contenders are known)

- "CAP2" Chasse Armee Protection,or two seat army fighter; Gourdou-Leseurre GL-50,Potez-11
and Hanriot HD.15

- "CAN2" Chasse Armee Nuit,or two seat night fighter for army; Gourdou-Leseurre GL-51 and Liore
et Olivier LeO-8

- "HB.2" two seat bomber flying boat; Levy-Besson HB.2 and Romano R.1

- "HR.3" three seat recce seaplane; Besson,Denhaur-Bellanger

- "HE.2" two seat trainer seaplane; Besson

Any additions are welcome, but only for the year 1919,temporarily.

Let me know when you want to revisit the pre-1919 period (perhaps in another thread). The English language resources for French development programs and tactical doctrines are pretty poor.

Thank you Patvig,

and for Avimimus, that will be in anther topic.

Hem,it seemed to be,nothing more in 1919,

and for the next year;

for 1920

- "BP.2" two seat high-altitude bomber; Dewoitine D.2,SPAD-36

- "To.3" three seat Police Colonial; Hanriot HD.18,Potez-XA and Breguet

- "B.3" three seat day bomber; Caudron C.34 (also)

- "BN.4" four seat night bomber; Bleriot Bl.76

Any additions are welcome

Hi,

I add the Farman F.110 to 1920 A.2 competition.

Hi,
For 1919 there were specifications for 11 categories, including four categories for fighter aircraft:
- C.1 single-seat, high altitude, 240 km/h at 7000 m, ceiling 9000 m
- C.1 single-seat, medium altitude, 270 km/h at 4000 m, ceiling 6500 m
- Cap.2 two-seat fighter and reconnaissance ("chasse et grande reconnaissance"), 200 km/h at 7000 m, ceiling 8500 m
- Can.2 two-seat fighter and night reconnaissance ("chasse et reconnaissance de nuit"), 190 km/h at 3000 m, ceiling 5000 m
Flight range 2h30 in each category. Armament was two front-firing Vickers machine guns on C.1, and additional two turret-mounted Lewis on two-seaters.
C.1 high-altitude and Cap.2 specifications implied the use of the Rateau supercharger, which proved unreliable.
Source for all the above: L'aviation de chasse française 1918-1940 by Jean Cuny & Raymond Danel, page 23.
Adrien

Results of the 1919 fighter programs:
- C.1 medium-altitude: the Spad 20 (already ordered in 1918) and the NiD.29 were selected
- C.1 high-altitude and Cap.2 were cancelled because of the failure of the Rateau supercharger
- Can.2: no prototype was ordered in 1919.
Same source, p.29.

Technical specifications were renewed in 1921, in seven categories (instead of eleven), including two for fighters:

- C.1, any altitude, 240 km/h at 7000 m, ceiling 8500 m, range 3 h.

Numerous prototypes: Bernard AB.10, Buscaylet-De Monge 5.2, De Marçay 4, Dewoitine D.1, Gourdou-Leseurre 30, 31, 40, Hanriot HD.26, HD.27, Letord-Béchereau, Lioré-et-Olivier LeO.9, Nieuport-Delage NiD.37, Spad 81, Wibault 3, Wibault 5
The Spad 81 and Dewoitine D.1 were selected in late 1923.

- Can.2, 200 km/h at 3000 m, ceiling 5500 m

One prototype only: Lioré-et-Olivier LeO.8. It is said that the aircraft manufacturers showed little interest because of the limited production expected.

The category Cap.2 was abandoned but several prototypes were ordered in 1921 for experiments with the Rateau supercharger: Gourdou-Leseurre F (later GL.50), H (later GL.51), Hanriot HD.15, Potez 11, Spad 36.

Many thanks my dear Adrien,

and I want to add about C.1 1921 contest,the all contenders were;

Bernard AB.10,Buscaylet De Monge 5/2,De Marcay 4,Dewoitine D.1 & D.8,Gourdou-Leseurre GL-30,
GL-31 & GL-40,Hanriot HD.12,HD.26 7 HD.27,Letord-Bechereau LB.2,Liore et Olivier LeO.9,Nieuport-
Delage NiD.37 & NiD.40,Potez-XVI,SPAD-41 & SPAD-81,Wibault Wib.3 and Wib.5.

Thank you for this more extended list.

About the Dewoitine D.1, its early design was based on the 1919 C.1 medium-altitude specifications, but it was ordered by the Army in 1924, answering the 1921 program. The D.8 was a high-altitude version with Rateau.

About the NiD.40 C1, it was originally planned with a Rateau, then built without it. It was modified as the NiD.40 R for altitude records.

About the Hanriot HD.12, I think it was not built to Army C.1 specifications. I have it as a seaborne fighter, competing with a Spad (unsure which) and the NiD.32 for a different 1919 Navy program, asking for a fighter trainer able to take off and land on short platforms. The NiD.32 was retained.

Finally, the Potez XVI remained a project only.

Thanks you my dear Adrien for your explanations;

and we must mention the projects too.
