Comic Art vrs Real Thing

so post here your favorite comic aircraft

Belgian artist Roger Leloup
Roger Leloup, born in Verviers, stands out for the highly detailed and technical drawings in his trademark series 'Yoko Tsuno'. In the early stages of his career, he was mainly doing background art assistance for Herge, Jacques Martin

The Adventures of Tintin - Flight 714 ( Vol 714 pour Sydney )
feature the "Carreidas 160" was design and draw by Leloup
a swing-wing private jet !

and they have nasty Lawyer

Please see attached two drawings that will be part of my next book , including 80 technical drawings of the rocket,the lunar tank and spacesuits of "Objectif lune" and "On a marché sur la lune".
I will exhibit the whole set in blueprints mode 30x40 format during the next meeting of Tintin fans in Chabeuil-France , next september.

The main engine is apparently a NERVA style solid nuclear thermal rocket fueled with plutonium. The launch site has a breeder reactor used to cook uranium 238 into plutonium for fuel rods. The rocket lifts off and lands with an axillary chemical rocket fueled by nitric acid and aniline, so as to prevent contaminating the ground with radiation.

other say its water heated by reactor core

fact is the Rocket need to be 40 km high be for ignite the nuclear engine
(coming down is easy the rocket slows down by Atmospheric reentry, rest take the Chemical engine)

for the atomic engine
a NERVA style solid NTR has nor en off trust for constant acceleration (and Artificial Gravity)
how ever there are alternatives

Nuclear salt-water rocket
very nasty stuff but high trust and high speed with less Fuel.

in fact is salty seawater like but with dissolved salts of Plutonium or U235.
These would be stored in tanks that would prevent a critical mass from forming by
some combination of geometry or neutron absorption
ones out of this tank it start a runaway fission chain reaction :eek:

One design would generate 13 megaNewtons of thrust at 66 km/s exhaust velocity
(compared to ~4.5 km/s exhaust velocity for the best chemical rockets of today).

The problem with the Tim Moonrocket is that we had to adapt to the texts in the comic and use 1950 technology only.
The texts said that the chemical engine should work with nitric acid and aniline and my calculations told me that the dam thing is a heavy as a light cruiser!
We resorted to two types of UNOBTAINIUM materials, already described in other comics of the same series, the TORNASOLITE, an antiradioactive and thermal super insulating, and the CALISTENE a heat superconductor acting as antiradioactive shield also.
The propergols react in a normal combustion chamber and the gases are ENORMOUSLY accelerated in a venturi located in the reactor core and insulated by a thermal lens of calistene to obtain the required momentum to take off. The control was achieved by V2 style nozzle vanes.
545,200 lt of water were stored in the peripheral tanks and were used as balancing mass, so that the gyroscopes are not overloaded, in the heating exchange system and finally as ejection mass of the atomic engine that is used only in the space.
Before entering into the engine (for nuclear mode propulsion) the water is used to refrigerate the reactor in a container of pressurized water and the nozzle rocket. Afterwards, it is dissociated in H and O2 using some devices known as Trypho-Crackers and goes into the combustion chamber and through the superheated venturi before being ejected by the nozzle.

We have had to use many tricks to make the thing look functional: NERVA, PLUTO, PWR, Nuclear salt water and more…

that sounds like "Nuclear Lightbulb" engine
were liquid or Gaseous nuclear fuel is confined in a fused quartz chamber, heat hydrogene
that even better because More trust (but less speed)
fuel gas uranium hexaflouride (U235F6)

Wow, the SK-1 I know (and no surprise it ended up with a conventional canopy) but this 'blind' version of the Me-309 is totally new to me. Nice one, Justo!

The 'Carreidas 160' is aviable as a scalemodel.
I have seen it in a store called 'beo' in Antwerps,Belgium.
Ofcourse I forgot my camera to take a snapshot of it.

I love Roger Leloups technical designs :)

Wikipedia enty on the Carreidas 160 states that there were radio controlled and free flight models which were flown and thereafter demonstrated the soundness of the design. As for the marquette/model of the Carreidas 160, I found this whilst surfing

I could scan his drawings on a new Topic not here because he is not a comic artist. Which Gunston's drawing are you interested? I posted an ATB at whatifmodelers some time ago but I have an STOVL Stealth tactical fighter too.

please , do not go to extremes in searching . I was hoping to get the tailless Harrier replacement with the F-16 style canopy and the dorsal inlet he had in the Warplanes of Future or a similarly named book which might be the one you mention .

Yes; I think Gimenez' background is either in architecture or engineering. I've always like his depiction of hardware - futuristic but plausible.
 
I grew up on the Gerry Anderson shows, and some of the designs made it into comic form, mainly in TV21. Here's my favourite design, modelled and drawn - though I don't remember what it was called.

This is the 'Test Plane' from the little comic included with the early '70s Hasbro GI Joe Adventure Team action figure set "Fantastic Freefall". Ironically, the box art shows a gray SAAB Viggen & is supposed to be US. The a/c pictured makes me think of a CF-100 Canuck relative.
