Found some weeks ago at the same testsite at Wuhan, where also the Liaoning and other ships EW's systems were tested ...

Now a few more interesting high-resolution photos from that new Chinese DDG ... said to be a test-stand for the Type 055 DDG:

Since ships are really not my topic ... any ideas from our naval experts ??
Anyway it will be interesting to see how it finally will look like ... and even more if a real ship will be build.

What's the purpose of that carrier deck on the building? It cannot be used for fixed wing landings, because there are buildings behind it. I could see it being used for flight deck training and maybe helo operations.

They put instrumented planes on the deck and tested antennae configurations to check for interference, I would guess.

The aft portion of the 055 deckhouse strikes me as odd. I'm assuming there's a hangar in there, but having a full break between the fore and aft structures would needlessly complicate operations, especially in bad weather. Unless they're having serious weight problems topside, I'm not seeing the logic there.

It came quite nicely along during the last months ...

There's no way that's the complete deckhouse; there's at least one deck, probably two, that they've not built in that mockup.

As a minor technical note: Long continuous deckhouses become effective in longitudinal bending which can be both good (increases the depth of structure resisting bending) and bad (can lead to fatigue failure at the ends of the deckhouse). Unless the extra structure is really needed breaking it up into smaller blocks can be desirable to avoid the problems of fatigue.

There also can be conflicting requirements from the operators; on the one hand they would like to have an extra deck with internal longitudinal access. On the other, they would like to have uninterrupted longitudinal access on the upperdeck. This argument goes around and around...

An attempt to complete those orphaned deckhouses by bringing them together
with cousins and nephews ..... sorry for that. ::)

Looks like a Chinese Zumwalt of sorts

As guess renderings go, that's not bad. Went a little overboard on the radars though. Would be pretty surprised to see it with 4 large fixed VSRs plus another one that rotates.

Here's another attempt ...

Posted today with the text "construction initiation ceremony for 055 destroyer number 1" on it ... and since apparently all related threads on cjbdy, that included this image were deleted or closed it looks like an "accidental leak".

Seems a very conservative design. That might not be a bad thing but I was rather expecting Chinese designs to start competing with Zumwalt.

First, Chinese doctrine never calls for a symmetrical arm race with the US, matching weapon type for weapon type.

Secondly, US only plans to build 3 zumwalt class, posing no significant numbers to be considered a game changer that beckons a Chinese response of equivalence.

Thirdly, a zumwalt type with a couple big guns and stealth features have no place in the anti access area denial doctrine really.

China's not shown any inclination to take risks with big ticket items like surface combatants. Gradual, conservative evolution seems very much to be their thing.

Agreed with all points but my sentiment remains, I was just expecting China to step it up a notch with large combatant design. Just like they have with Type-022 FAC and J-20 fighter and UCAVs.

Whatever happened to the Trimaran fad? I was rather hoping for a trimaran cruiser

Trimarans don't seem to scale well. The larger the ship, the less helpful a trimaran form becomes.

There are bunch of reasons why really big multis are problematic. If high speed is not an essential requirement, monos are still more economical and practical.

Yeah that might be the dish for an illuminator back there, or not a radar at all, but no big SMART-L clone like the local bloggers were putting on their renders. Also looks like they're only mounting fixed panels on the side facing the water, so until someone cruises by on a boat and snaps a pic we won't have a real look at those arrays.
