Hi,

Available information on Iaotian-1 Aotian-1 is still confusing and remains to be pieced up properly.

China has seemingly flown-tested, on september 20, 2013 an unpowered experimental vehicle code-named Iaotian-1 Aotian-1 (遨天1号 or 遨天一号in the Hulun Buir (呼伦贝尔市) region (northeastern inner Mongolia) a region of grasslands and high steppes. And now a test range too for TAEM (Terminal Area Energy Management) maneuvers / landing of a potential chinese Reusable Launch Vehicle (可重复使用运载器) contender.

This project would originate from CALT (Chinese Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology) and as such might be a direct heir of their "old" project 921-706 (the RLV rival of Shenzhou). CALT is part of CASC.

As of today, other forum sources, where chinese-speaking members comment ([Elixir] and [Henri K.] - see footnote below), indicate that:
(1) the piece of information originates from CALT;
(2) this piece of information was essentially targeted towards Western websites to pass it along, with scant information available on screened chinese forums (Weibo, etc.);
(3) one or more pictures posted on Weibo (微博) by a project member, were immediately erased, but some managed to be archived (see below);
The picture is said to originate from the following CALT-related blog [edit: latest post published by hangtianchuangxin dates back to 2014-10-30 21:18 来自 iOS, no follow up ever after]:
http://e.weibo.com/hangtianchuangxin
(4) the vehicle -- which, to the best of other knowledgable Chinese-speaking forum members, has not been pictured yet -- but would bear striking similarities with Dream Chaser (well, project 50/50 and Bor4 would have been a better historical reference for the sake of accuracy). Conditional is important: Dream Chaser was flown tested last week and there might be creating some sort of confusion here.

All of these information need confirmation from other sources.

Anyone?

;)

PS) This post draws heavily from information made available by [Henri K.] aka [Elixir] aka [Henri Kenhmann] aka [hk299792458] (these alias equivalences were formally acknowleged on Nov.14, 2012 on defense.pk forum in response to a question by [qwerrty]) who is/are a very active blogger supposedly but very unlikely from France (法国), mostly writing in French, the language of diplomacy. The family name Kenhmann happens to be ultra-extremely rare and seems to have german origins (Kehn borrows from an old german word meaning "skiff" or "barge"). Apart from a canadian ebay account with the surname "Kenhmann", little could be found in 2012 on Henri Kenhmann, and Kehnmann in general. This(these) individual(s) is(are) active on, and inactive but subscribed to, many other space-related forums (although this might be the same person using different aliases) such as: abcbourse.com, air-defense.net, allhtml.com, astronautique.actifforum.com, beatzone.cz, boardreader.com, boursematch.com, checkoutthelatest.com, clip.dj, daily-bourse.fr, defense.pk, dp.sina.cn, flickr.com, forumconstruire.com, forum.hardware.fr, freemp3u.com, plus.google.com, hmongplay.com, indiandefence.com, imageshack.us, livraddict.com, merops.com, militaryphotos.net, moneymakergroup.com, ps3youtube.com, shelby.tv, socialblade.com, talkgold.com, video.mivzakon.co.il, vtap.com, youreplay.com, youtube.com, etc. to name a few. It very surprising he's not an (active) member of SPF yet, since it would have been easier for us all to have him starting this new thread. I'm sure SPF members would be eager to be privileged for new scoops from this "well-known and respected forum member on Chinese military developments" (quote from [mepal1], 28/09/2013, http://www.chinesedefence.com/forums/chinese-navy/1464-type-054-type-054a-jiangkai-class-ffg-19.html/). On other forums, [Henri K] is credited with numerous records of accurate information on every possible chinese-related military fields. On 09/07/2013, sinodefenceforum.com member [SinoSoldier] wrote, without prior fact-checking: "There is this guy called Henry Kenhmann from France who works as an engineer. He has been a very close follower of the Chinese military and somehow has documents relating to weapons systems never heard of before. His predictions are scarily accurate and as far as "track record" goes, his information seems to be a lot more accurate than HuiTong. Some of his "predictions" are the 48000 ton LHD, HQ-8, HQ-26, solid state laser, etc. He asserted that the 055 will be in construction in 2013 before anyone else did, and he apparently also got these rumors: - Type 055 will have QC280 ; - Type 055 will be 12000 tons ; - It will have the Type 1130 CIWS ; - Construction will possibly begin in 2013 ; - Type 055 will have the PJ38 ; - It will have superior ECM ; - A smaller complement ; - Same radar as 052D" (source: http://www.sinodefenceforum.com/navy/type-055-ddg-plans-next-generation-destroyer-thread-3-6480.html). In light of these information, and as a key provider of goldmine chinese R&D hard-to-find information, [Henri K]'s statements on Aotian-1 should be studied seriously: [Henri K] might well be considered like a news agency (sort of), tied to -- informally or not -- chinese government-related sources/agencies/insiders (controlled "leak" and information dissemination), which make their information extremely valuable but prone to careful fact checking and always to be framed in balanced, contextual analysis. As time goes by, [Elixir] behaves like an online evangelist, with the clear intent to visibly shape one specific online environment: the perception of Chinese strength at the dawn of the 21st century, through select aerospace and military topical prisms. [Elixir] exhibits different distinct writing styles and may involve several individuals. However, given the scope and almost continuous rate of information diffusion, on an almost full-time basis on the aforementioned forums/websites, [Elixir] may also be part of a larger, plan. It may likely be considered as one of many apparent visibility modes of a well-structured, state- or para-state sponsored organization. Now, why chose the alias [Elixir] (酏) remains a mystery wrapped in a riddle: An elixir is conveniently defined as a "clear, sweet-flavored liquid used for medicinal purposes, to be taken orally and intended to cure one's ills", often presented as a "solution of at least one active ingredient" with the requirement to be "stored in a tightly closed and light resistant container away from direct heat and sunlight". [Elixir] went remarkably silent in late january 2014 on target forums of interest highlighting the difficulties for some observers to rely on this single feeding source to cast their own (actually "adroitly shaped") view of Chinese aerospace and military organizations. [Elixir] was revived and back again on the operational online information theater on 02/17/14. Their vanishing perfectly matches up with celebrations of the Chinese's New Year holidays. On April 27, 2016 at 9:12 LT [Elixir] announced pulling out from Forum de la Conquête Spatiale (FCS) claiming health reasons. A few days later, [Elixir] was back at it again, with new fluency in French and complete refurbished writing skills and grammatical style (stylometry softwares such as JGAAP could be helpful here). Could this be interpreted as a turnover? Whichever organization goes behind manpowered [Elixir] is likely to be state-sponsored. The purpose and aims of this apparent psyop yet has to be determined. But honestly, its aims are very clear. N'es-ce pas? Aller Zhu

Re: Iaotian-1, a Chinese hypersonic reentry demonstrator flown tested on 20/09/2013?

Aotian-1 vs Shenlong

  • Needless to say, Iaotian-1 Aotian-1 should not be confused with the Shenlong Space Plane (神龙”空天飞机), developed as part of the 863 State High Technology R&D Plan (国家高技术研究发展计划).
  • The Shenlong Space Plane project was code named 863-706. As to the vehicle, it was a wingle reentry vehicle weighting 4 ton. This vehicle was seemingly flown tested several times, including at Mach 15 on January 8, 2011. Chinese media outlets used the specific expression "试飞" standing for "test flight" to qualify the test. Of additional interest, the development of the Shenlong Space Plane has been associated with the 611 Research Institute, Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).

Re: Iaotian-1, a Chinese hypersonic reentry demonstrator flown tested on 20/09/2013?

All chinese articles I read through so far (thx googletranslate!) just comment on information made available on western blogs. No real "news", actually. And lots of nationalistic statements on the glorious chinese ability to catch up with US technological marvels in force projection (with a mix of FOBS, X-37B, J-20 along the way). Few interesting comments but loads of crap. From what I could read up to now, Iaotian-1 Aotian-1 is described as a transatmospheric vehicle capable of orbiting the earth once. It is said to be similar to the "Dream Chaser". Again, this is all confusing and I am looking forward to reading other independent news to corroborate all that.

Very intriguing indeed.

Last post for today.

As of now, a search using the folliwing keyword "遨天1号" in the "image section" of Baidu (i.e. the equivalent of "google image"), direct link here:
http://image.baidu.com
... ended up with no pertinent result (unless you are a soccer lover, for whatever keyword/database reason.)

PS) Edit 20160510. On may also use the following keyword: 遨天一号

Re: Iaotian-1, a Chinese hypersonic reentry demonstrator flown tested on 20/09/2013?

Sometimes the code-name also reads/translates as "Aotian-1"

[added: Iaotian-1 is one of several possible translitterations, Aotian-1 seems more appropriate]

Re: Iaotian-1, a Chinese hypersonic reentry demonstrator flown tested on 20/09/2013?

Hi back;

First, a big thank you to Deino for having posted this thread today on SinoDefense Forum (SDF) -- I'm not a member of this forum yet -- and "asking for more". Link is: http://www.sinodefenceforum.com/

Please find below a compendium of first reactions. For the sake of clarity, capitalized words put into brackets -- i.e. [QWERTY] -- indicate a forum member alias under which the related comment was made.

Some SDF members reposted a well-known CAV-related waverider configuration circulated years ago, originating from a Chinese technical publication. Patent literature may prove to be more interesting, however.

[SINOSOLDIER], SDF member, had "heard the same thing a few weeks prior. Best to wait it out."

[KROKO], SDF member, indicated that the Hulun Buir was very close to the Russian border and expressed his "doubts that china would want to test unpowered planes on that place. Could fall into the wrong side of the border..."

[SIEGECROSSBOW], SDF supermoderator, noted that "The only information on this was the aforementioned blog post, but even that was take down pretty quickly. I think waiting is the better option here, unless you want the wall climbers to go to Inner Mongolia."

Re: Iaotian-1, a Chinese hypersonic reentry demonstrator flown tested on 20/09/2013?

OK guys. I'll keep investigating and posting stuff until I understand what's going on.

A.

Fact checking starts with Hulun Buir region.
Yes indeed, it's upnorth and close to the Russian border.
These wikipedia maps shows us clearly where it is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:China_Inner_Mongolia_Hulunbuir.svg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:China_Inner_Mongolia_location_map.svg

Challenge: identifying a test range suitable for a hypersonic winged test vehicle (in this region).

Googlemap anyone?

Re: Iaotian-1, a Chinese hypersonic reentry demonstrator flown tested on 20/09/2013?

PLA military region where the flight-test allegedly happened.

The Hulun Buir region where Iaotian-1 Aotian-1 test flight allegedly happened is to be related to one of the People Liberation Army (PLA)'s 7 military regions (MR).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PLA_Military_Region

The only PLA MR matching the Hulun Buir geographical situation is the Shenyang Military Region (see attached wikipedia map)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenyang_Military_Region
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Shenyang_Military_Region.svg

Air Bases associated to PLA's Shenyang MR

The number of potential sites where the test flight supposedly happened is limited to 30 Air Bases of interest including the Dingxin / Shuangchengzi AB which has a special missile testing unit.

C. Kopp (Australia) has issued a page / site / report cataloguing "over 200 military and dual use airfields". "It includes Google Earth KMZ files for air bases and civil airports where the identity of the base can be established with some confidence. As all data is open source, APA cannot guarantee that the data is comprehensive or up to date in every instance. The site will be updated as more open source data and high resolution imagery becomes available."

This resource might be of interest to any one with a wish to further investigation of Iaotian-1 /Aotian-1:

source: Dr Carlo Kopp, People's Liberation Army Air Force and Naval Air Arm Air Base Infrastructure, Technical Report APA-TR-2007-0103, 30/01/ 2007 (updates : 15/01/ 2011 ; 29/03/2012 ; 03/04/2012), http://www.ausairpower.net/APA-PLA-AFBs.html

In any case, Kopp's catalogue might be interesting to fact check any future revelation on Iaotian Aotian-1 whenever it ever gets official. If it ever gets…

Dingxin is not in the same region.

Re: Iaotian-1, a Chinese hypersonic reentry demonstrator flown tested on 20/09/2013?

To admit I would agree that Dingxin AB is the most likely base even it is much more away from Russia and located in the Lanzhou MR.

By the way there are - at least officially - not that many operational bases and in regard to Carlo Kopp I would prefer my own "sources", since the map is wrong (Map from James Lawrence published in my book "Modern Chinese Warplanes" (Harpia Publ.), p. 123)

Re: Iaotian-1, a Chinese hypersonic reentry demonstrator flown tested on 20/09/2013?

Thx alot Deino.

BTW, at the time when the search begins for this "new" Chinese spaceplane, and I feel being not alone in this quest, counterpoints are worth reading, just to keep both feet on the ground. Years ago, the Shenlong / Divine Dragon affair broke many stories. Most of them built one upon another, iterated in closed loops and auto-citations. Whatever leak / weak signal shows up today, it is always tempting to believe in what we wished were existing while trying to connect the dots. Alas, the full-frame reality picture often happens to be less glamorous.

In that respect, the following article is worth reading:

Laura Grego (Senior Scientist), "Claims About China's Space Plane unconvincing", Union of Concerned Scientists, 07/12/2012
http://allthingsnuclear.org/claims-about-chinas-space-plane-unconvincing/

That post is by no means intended to be a showstopper - quite the opposite. It just aims at making sure we walk the right path along this snarkfullish journey currently called Iaotian-1 Aotian-1.

There do appear to be way more airbases out there than are accounted for in the PLAAF or PLANAF's ORBATs. Carlo and I built that article and one on airfield UGFs from a massive KML I put together showing airbases in China. If you plot the bases with "known" operational units, there are still a whole mess of airfields out there you'd be missing. Are they all necessarily operational? Probably not, although I did make an effort to mark bases known to be non-operational separately.

Re: Iaotian-1, a Chinese hypersonic reentry demonstrator flown tested on 20/09/2013?

Thanks and I agree with You that there are indeed many, many more airbases out there in China, but by looking at operational ones would narrow down the hunt for this unknown base.
There problem behin that - and You mention it - is that I indeed cncentrated only on the operational ones directly assigned to a known regiment/division .... to add the non-operational ones too would have made this map even more confusing.

However - and here You surely know the material much better than me - in line of the recent developments like urban development several bases were simply given up or transferred to the civil authorities and as such "to mark bases known to be non-operational separately" would be quite usefull since many of then will never return to operational status again.

Oh, I was in no way trying to disparage your work! The info you chose to present is perfectly logical and fits the material just fine. My point is just that there are a ton of airfields out there that aren't necessarily going to have known operational units associated with them, and that one of them might be the culprit we're looking for here as they're far easier to overlook.

Re: Iaotian-1, a Chinese hypersonic reentry demonstrator flown tested on 20/09/2013?

It seems the actual project name is "AOTIAN-1", not IAOTIAN-1 as initially suggested by [Henri K] on a well-known French astronautics forum. Incidentally, it happens that the initial apparent misspelling of "IOATIAN-1" enables a fairly accurate and easy tracking of how information percolates and flourishes on the web, based on a good understanding of how recent updates of google Panda + Pinguin SEO engine suites actually work.

Hi there,

Worth reading again today, a 2006 Flight magazine article by Rob Coppinger reporting that CALT unveiled its RLV roadmap at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Valencia, Spain. If any september 20, 2013 flight test event ever happened, it might be somewhat described by this roadmap, even if actual details slightly differ.

The article reads: « "We don't have an official schedule for the programme, but the first generation could be developed in 15 years," says CALT research and development centre manager Yong Yang. He says CALT expects to conduct a Mach 15 re-entry demonstration flight using a winged upper stage that will be launched to an altitude of 100km (62 miles). Another planned demonstration is an automatic flight and landing test to prove guidance, navigation and control systems. No dates have been provided for these tests.»

Why would Mi-26 be involved in/for Aotian-1 flight test?
Considering the first rash of information available on weibo's blog, the september 20, 2013 flight test involved one russian-made Mi-26 heavy lift helicopter. China started to use Mi-26 in 2007 and purchased a couple of them in 2008 (see below). These helicopters have a payload capacity of 20 metric tons, and a maximum take-off weight of 56 metric tons with a ceiling of 4500 m. As such, the september 20, 2013 Aotian-1 flight test might have only been the first successful drop test, from a conservative ceiling figure of 4000m of a vehicle, for a final, unpowered glide (?), approach and landing test (ALT). The maximum weight of the test vehicle would have to be less then 20 t anyway. Nice. Hefty.

Mi-26 general characteristics
A Mi-26 dedicated wikipedia page details its the vehicle history, variants, characteristics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mil_Mi-26
  • Crew: Five– 2 pilots, 1 navigator, 1 flight engineer, 1 flight technician

  • Service ceiling: 4,600 m (15,100 ft)
Mi-26 variants
Below are all known variants of the Mi-26 according to wikipedia's above reference.
It would be interesting to determine which type(s) of Mi-26 was purchased by China, ands which was used during the september 20, 2013 flight test.
  • Mi-26: Military cargo/freight transport version. NATO name: 'Halo-A'.
  • Mi-26A: Upgraded version with an upgraded flight/navigation system.
  • Mi-26M: Upgraded version of the Mi-26; designed for better performance.
  • Mi-26MS: Aeromedical evacuation version.

  • Mi-26TC: Export version of the Mi-26T.
  • Mi-26TZ: Fuel tanker version.
  • Mi-26T2: Improved version of the Mi-26T equipped with BREO-26 airborne electronic system, allowing it to fly any time, day or night, under good and bad weather conditions.
Mi-26 studied for potential role during Soviet Buran space shuttle program
Mi-26 was a brand new helicopter when it was explored as a possible means of transportation for the soviet Buran space shuttle. "The developers of the Buran space vehicle programme considered using a couple of Mi-26 helicopters to "bundle" lift components for the Buran spacecraft, but test flights with a mock-up showed how risky and impractical that was."
source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mil_Mi-26#Buran_programme
quoting: Dr. Fedotov, V.A. "BURAN Orbital Spaceship Airframe Creation". Buran Energia. Retrieved 22 January 2013
http://www.buran-energia.com/documentation/documentation-akc-air-transportation.php

This type of use seems to be fairly risky for an operational use, and thus not applicable to understanding the Aotian-1 flight test.

Reminder about Mi-26.
On 05/11/2008, People's Daily Online News issued an article on China's then recent acquisition of two Mi-26 on the occasion of the Zhuhai 2008 airshow. Until then, "[T]he China Flying Dragon Special Aviation Company introduced the first Mi-26 helicopter in China in 2007 through a leasing arrangement. The company has now purchased it outright. The handover of the property rights was finalized at today’s ceremony,” said an official of China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation.” This online article read that "The second Mi-26 helicopter in the purchase agreement will be primarily used for forest fire protection in Northeast China,” he was quoted as saying.

Still trying to connect the dots… In the article below, CAS stands for "Chinese Academy of Science".

Qian Xuesen (11/12/11-30/10/09) was the father of the Chinese Space program. On June 12, 2009, CAS set up a "Qian Xuesen National Engineering Science Experiment Base". There seems to be a relation between this "Experiment Base" and hypersonic research. A simple googlesearch leads to a recently published paper (02/09/2013) by Michael Raska, Research Fellow at the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (IDSS), a constituent unit of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Quoting M. Raska:

"Hypersonic Vehicle Technology Project:
While data on China’s hypersonic research remains scarce, there are signs that China is developing conceptual and experimental hypersonic flight vehicle technologies such as hypersonic cruise vehicles (HCV) capable of manoeuvring at Mach 5 speeds (6,150+ km/h), and flying in near-space altitudes. Andrew Erickson, Associate Professor at the US Naval War College, analysed China’s Shenlong (Divine Dragon) spaceplane project, including its apparent test flight in 2011 and noted subsequent profusion of Chinese research articles on the subject. Similarly, Mark Stokes from the Project2049 Institute identified new research institutes focusing exclusively on the design and development of hypersonic test flight vehicles, including the 10th Research Institute also known as the Near Space Flight Vehicle Research Institute, under the China Academy of Launch Technology (CALT) - China’s largest entity involved in the development and manufacturing of space launch vehicles and related ballistic missile systems. The Qian Xuesen National Engineering Science Experiment Base in Beijing’s Huairou district is also one of China’s key HCV research centres."

Another article was recently published in the same "spirit" targeting a much wider audience (Popular Science):
Peter W. Singer (Director 21st Century Defense Initiative, Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution), "Inside China's secret arsenal", Popular Science, December 2012, accessed online from:
http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2012-12/inside-chinas-secret-arsenal

These papers occasionally balance and comment little piece of news regularly published on Chinese internet "source" such as:
"On September 3, 2013, Huanqiu, the Chinese edition of Global Times, published an article titled, “China Works on Three Big, Secret Military Projects? Divine Light and High Energy Weapons.” China’s National High-Tech Research and Development Program (the 863 Program) has vigorously worked on three types of mysterious military and civil dual-use high-tech research and development projects: 1) high power laser weapons development; 2) hypersonic aerobatic technology; 3) the 2nd generation “Beidou” satellite navigation system."

Project 869: CALT Tianjiao-1 proposal and Aotian-1. . . . . . . . ..... connecting the dots?

Early information on Aotian-1 hinted at some sort of connection between this vehicle and the US Dream Chaser project. As already stated, we could even go back 50 years earlier and start this story with Gleb LL's SPIRAL program... Let's call this the hypothetised form factor.

One possible lead was given in mid-2011 by Richard D. Fisher, a well-known US analyst with an expertise in Chinese affairs.

Ready? Let's go.

In the summer of 2011, R.D. Fisher released a series of slides presenting his vision and understanding of the Chinese Space Plane program, which I'm sure could have been better dressed into subtlety. Fisher's presentation bears some interest today as it explores the connection between state project 863 and manned / RLV efforts. Quoting Fisher's study: "At about the same time [1986] the Air Ministry, sensing opportunity, starts its “869 Project” which advances space plane concepts to meet the goals of the 863 Program. This preference reflects their desire to compete with U.S., Soviet, French and Japanese space plane programs. A key Chinese historical article* about this period makes clear that the Air Ministry was guided in particular by the military potential of space planes, to include consideration of space combat missions."

The historical article of interest wherein key information was extracted from, is: Li Chengzi and Zheng Xiaoqi (Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics), “The Debate Over Placing Priority on the Space Shuttle or Manned Spacecraft During Consideration of China’s Manned Space Program,” Science and Technology Review, Submitted August 2009.

One slide of interest details CALT's "Tianjiao-1" proposal for project 869: a 20-25 t mini-shuttle launched atop a carrier-rocket. The original vehicle's basic aerodynamic shape is very classical. However, a later (2009) conference artwork (see picture) shows what may have been flown tested on september 20, 2013. Quoting R.D. Fisher again: "Possible lifting body based derivative featured in artwork for 2009 Chinese conference."

source: Richard D. Fisher, "China's Space Plane Program", International Assessment & Strategy Center, strategycenter.net, 24/08/2011,

http://www.strategycenter.net/docLib/20111024_ChinasSpacePlaneProgram.pdf

Images speak for themselves.

Let me be clear, however. The connection between RD Fisher's interpretation of Tianjiao-1 and the "2009-Chinese-HL_20-lifting_body-conference-artwork-picture" (sorry guys for this expression), still needs to be clarified. Until now, the connection still is an unproven hypothesis.

Thus if anyone could pass on this message to R.D. Fisher, with whom I never met, that's be great: Dear mister Dick Fisher, would you please actually connect the dots to get a better understanding. The connection between Tianjiao-1 and the 2009 artwork is not proven, just an overworn argument of authority. I'm sure this message will edge its way through…

:) :p ::) ;) ;D

This figure matches with the payload performance of a Russian-made Mi-26 helicopter for either a drop test or crane takeaway on a desert airfield after drop testing from a modified Il-76. Maybe we should look into that, too.

As a result, Aotian-1 weight would fare a maximum 20 t, not 25 t. Maybe the weight envelope was downsized to 20 t sometimes during the program, as a consequence of iterative AOA studies in the design engineering process, taking into account both China's "future launcher" performance capabilities AND performances of available vehicles required to test the vehicle. To my understanding, allocating resources to develop -- as part of a separate, parallel program -- a new helicopter capable of lifting 25 metric tons would take too much time, add up risks. And the market for this new "would-be" would nichy, if not purely experimental. Chinese people are very pragmatic. Easier to buy and old working model from Russians. Less expensive. Enabling fast track effort.

Dingxin is not in the same region.

Well... I'm not sure this is the one we're looking for. But thx for the piece of information, since this would be a likely place of choice to flight-test any future reusable aerospace vehicle: just a few miles away from Jiuquan space launch center! What may lack is a long, long, long runway.

Special to SPF member, wild bunch of information:
  • General "Dingxin airbase, located in north central China near the Shuangchengzi missile test range, is home to a great deal of PLAAF flight test efforts. Pockmarked terrain and targets marked in the desert indicate that among other things, Dingxin is home to weapons integration testing.
  • Nearby cities: Jiuquan, Jiayuguan City , Zhangye
  • Coordinates: 40°24'6"N 99°47'29"E
Thx for looking.

Short anwer: Mi-26TC "Halo".
Around 300 variants and subvariants have been produced since it first flew on december 14th, 1977 in Russia (prototype). This helicopter was declared operational in 1986. As of today, and to the best of my understanding, China is currently using 3 (three) Mi-26TC. In 2010, purchasing a 4th one, was also considered. It is also my understanding that some sort of joint venture later promoted the (seemingly ongoing) joint development of a 33t heavy lift helicopter.

"In March 2010 Rostvertol plc and Lectern Aviation Supplies Co. Ltd (China) signed a contract on delivery of a new Mi-26Tc helicopter to China. This is already the third Mi-26TC sold to the People’s Republic of China. The same as the first two helicopters the third Mi-26TC is being purchased mainly for extinguishing fires and liquidating consequences of emergency situations. The cooperation between Rostvertol plc and Lectern Aviation Supplies Co. Ltd is lasting for more than five years since the Rostov enterprise entered the Chinese market. In April 2006 during the visit of the Rostvertol plc specialists to China and agreement was signed between Rostvertol and Lectern Aviation on establishing a joint Russian- Hong Kong enterprise. In October 2006 such an enterprise was established – Rostvertol Helicopters China Limited – what substantially helped in promotion of the Rostvertol plc products in China. The first Mi-26TC (certified modification of the Mi-26T) was obtained by China Flying dragon Special Aviation Company in May 2008. Initially, in 2007, the helicopter was handed over for lease for a 3-years period, however the Mi-26TC showed its worth in extinguishing serious fires in the Chinese provinces, in transporting bulky cargoes and in liquidating consequences of earthquakes, and China Flying Dragon bought it out before the lease term expired. In November 2008 during the international air show China’2008 a contract on sale of the second Mi-26TC to the Chinese air carrier Qindao Helicopters Special Aviation Co. was signed. The helicopter was delivered to China in July 2009 where it is successfully used for extinguishing fires and liquidating consequences of emergency situations."

Beyond future alphanumerics: Aotian-1, Aotian-2... Aotian-10000?

Needless to say, the very fact there is a project or vehicle code-named Aotian-1 (遨天1号) implies that sometimes in the future another vehicle/project/whatever will show-up bearing another incremented figure name: Aotian-2 (遨天2号), possibly Aotian-3 (遨天3号), possibly Aotian-4 (遨天4号), Aotian-5 (遨天5号), and I could raise the bar till infinite, say... Aotian-10000 (遨天10000号) but it'd take too much time. For all those who wonder, I am not privileged to any information: what I'm saying is just based on pure logic. And yes indeed, that is super logic, n'est-ce pas? Future Aotian birds will either be a limited series of Incremental performance Growth Vehicles OR a full fleet of separate vehicles. Only time will tell.

There is indeed a dedicated spotter community forum with an expertise in helicopters, and jets, and any flying honeyjunk you wanna know about: http://jetphotos.net
This is where an 18-member (as of today - please check out this post date) self-proclaimed "China Aviation Spotter Group" (CASG) operates with the following relevant link:
http://jetphotos.net/members/viewgroup.php?id=61

Incidentally, this is where Chinese Mi-26TC "Halo" tail code numbers (identifiers) and pictures can be found in plain sight.

The 1st Chinese Mi-26TC "Halo" operated by China Flying Dragon Airline, is serialled B-7802 (tail code) with CN registration number #34001212619. Dressed in red, its main mission is firefighting and disaster relief operations.
http://jetphotos.net/showphotos.php?cn=34001212619

2nd Chinese Mi-26TC "Halo" operated by Qingdao helicopters, is assigned tail code B-7803 with CN registration number #34001212620
http://jetphotos.net/showphotos.php?cn=34001212620. It is painted orange with grey on the underside.
http://pic.feeyo.com/posts/556/5566701.html

3rd Chinese Mi-26TC "Halo" was flown to China on October 14, 2010 and delivered to Lectern Aviation Supply on Monday Nov 15, 2010. It is assigned tail code B-7807. Painted red like its predecessor Mi-26TC / B-7802, its primary mission is firefighting and disaster relief operations.

These hellos still rely on old style cockpit design, and do not use the BREO-26 glass cockpit available for Russian Mi-26T2.

... which is what makes it so... interesting!

Attached is a picture posted on Panoramio -- BTW a great site-- taken by [ferrari575] in february 2011 at Hulun Buir Hailar Airport (呼伦贝尔海拉尔机场), just one month after this airport was renamed (it was formerly called Hailar DongChang Airport). Worth noticing is Mi-26TC "Halo" B-7807 on site.

While this may be a great starting point, this by no means implies that:
  • any such helicopter was on site on september 20, 2013;
  • Aotian-1's alleged flight-test happened;
  • Aotian-1's alleged flight-test happened in Hulun Buir (region);
  • Aotian-1's alleged flight-test happened at Hailar airport;

Looking for sources of inspiration. The 2009 conference background poster "identified" by Richard D. Fisher, seems to be heavily inspired by an earlier OSC-NASA artwork commissioned for illustrating the Orbital Space Plane (OSP) program. While this US program "folded", the winged body orbital space plane* concept was later (2010) revived by OSC (it was then renamed Prometheus).

*Post edited to correct some typos. The first version of this post mistakenly used the expression "winged bidy aerospace plane". I was definitey exhausted when I wrote it. Now fixed!

Don't bother:
http://ca.search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0geu8KKDotSWDEAR3fqFAx.?p=Henri%20Kenhmann%20China&fr=spigot-yhp-ie&fr2=sfp&type=937811
It is clear based on his history of posting that `Henry Kenhman` is nothing more than a propaganda organ from the Chinese military simply using a fake French name on the internet to publish (pretend to 'leak') infos on Chinese military programs (their favorite method, go figure why...).
Like, ya... what are the odds that a `French blogger' interested in the Chinese military and space programs would write posts on both Pakistani army and Indian aerospace forums... Ahem... (both are mutually excluding when it comes to the Chinese military programs)(just follow those for long enough counting the number of insults traded online to get yourself a headache and you will get the idea).
And besides, if he was a French aerospace buff, he would definitely not be posting at the right places. Never saw anything by someone using his name or nicknames on any of the forums i frequent. I would recommand he tries the Nasa Spaceflight Forum, then he might get an real audience (or get himself sidelined or kicked out of there real quick when they would find out his game).

"China is also pursuing a manned space shuttle programme, according to China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation chairman Gao Hongwei. Gao was speaking on 25 September at the 64th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Beijing."

"Prior to Gao's 25 September statement the most substantive revelation about China's space shuttle ambitions was made at the 2006 IAC, when two engineers from the China Academy of Space Launch Vehicle Technology described two space plane concepts."

"Other Chinese sources have indicated that the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation was heavily involved in designing the small Shenlong suborbital space plane technology demonstrator and may be equally involved in follow-on space place programmes. Shenlong is similar in size to the Boeing X-37B and has made at least one suborbital test flight, according to Chinese reports that were confirmed by a Russian source."

"Finders Keepers and I found it!" (and their brothers too). Yep, picture taken on November, 14th 2009
Takes soooo much f* time to fact-check what other people report. So much crap. So many partially reported information.
It's super difficult to (re)connect the dots.
FYI, this is the first time this picture is ever posted outside of the Chinese web. SPF kinda scoop, hey!
Gosh, that was taken 4 years ago, picture this!
